I do not have diabetes
Hi! New member to the group. My little boy who is 6 started showing some diabetic symptoms over the Summer holidays. Out of nowhere started needing the toilet lots, wetting bed (been dry since he was 3), has episodes of feeling tired and unwell, has had a fungal infection. Diabetes is on his Dad's side of family. He had a finger prick blood test done in the hospital and everything came back fine? Just found out that that was just a general blood test that they did! What type of test should I be asking for? Feel quite lost in the system at the moment and like a neurotic parent! Thanks in advance.

Hello. We can't diagnose on this forum but from what you've said you need to get a blood sugar test done given his symptoms. A normal blood sugar for him will be between 4 and 7 and I am surprised this wasn't checked at hospital with a finger prick test or a blood draw for his average blood sugar (HBA1c) and other things they would want to look for e.g. infection. If you are sure they didn't then please get it done in A & E Paediatric and explain your fears, which are totally reasonable, to the triage nurse. At the very least she can check the notes and reassure you if the test was done. You are his mum so you will know if he's losing weight, is very thirsty which are other symptoms to mention.
Note that Type 1 diabetes only has a weak genetic link and isn't linked to type 2 (different illness) so may be nothing to do with the family. type 1 has an acute onset in kids and will be taken very seriously so don't hesitate to get this ruled out.

Hi. Many pharmacies will do a finger-prick test for free. It only takes a few minutes with an instant answer. A test done roughly a couple hours after food is best as the reading should be below around 8.5. If it's higher then see the GP.

It might be a simple urinary infection. The symptoms can be really bizarre. So get his urine tested too. I hope you find a solution soon.
