Advice on blood glucose results

The other day my wife had what appeared to be a major crash after us both having had a sneaky 'midnight feast' after discovering a local sweet shop. Somehow someone thought of diabetes so we ordered a home blood glucose test. After doing a proper fasting test twice, both results seemed to come up at 8, though we still weren't sure because it involved comparing colours.

Since my wife is petrified of needles, we thought we'd get a blood glucose monitor (Accu-chek Aviva) and get a few digital readings before facing the doctors. Sure enough, my wife got readings of 7.8 an hour after eating. On a whim I had a go... and got 7.9.

Whilst still wondering what the heck to think, we thought we'd run a science lesson for the kids about blood glucose and how the body carries energy around. So an hour after dinner we tested the three eldest. DD2 came up a nice normal 6.6 but DS1 came up at 8.6 and DD1 was 9.2.

So suddenly all the requests for constant water and rushing to the toilet came into our minds whilst we attempted to carry on the science lesson in a normal tone of voice while doing 'oh my god' glances at each other.

The kids don't have any sugary sweets or junk food and all have an extremely good diet.

Could these results be normal or should we all be going to get tested?

What do you mean proper fasting test? You have not described what you did. A fasting test is done before you eat, not after.

I hope that you used a fresh lancet for every person you tested, there is a risk of transmission of blood bourne viruses from sharing sharp things like needles.

We are not doctors and we don't diagnose here. There can be all kinds of reasons that results can be elevated - infection being one of them, it isn't necessarily diabetes.

You need to talk to a doctor at the very least, or go to the pharmacy ask for a glucose blood test - some of them do them for free - and you may be directed to the doctor from there. You can also call NHS Direct on 08454647

1hr after food ,depending on what u eat can be that high as a non diabetic, if you are worried plz seek medical advise as only your gp can really help :D
