If they have their own store then it great to ask advice for growing and they should sell plant-lets at a fraction of the garden centres prices.
They can also advise on how to stop carrot fly (most cover with horti fabric or companion planting) if you grow carrots that is ... Bug control in general around your veggies .. Feeding your veggies .. And best of all exhibiting your produce ..
I did yes to grow a lot of my own veg, but between ill health .. Rabbits and deer eating it before I could I gave up growing .. Have just started again this year .. It's been wonderful watching the deer eating my runner beans :banghead:

I checked my gooseberries, though" they'll be ready next week"

Next week, all gone, bloomin' blackbirds.

Rebuild the fruit cage is now a winter job.

I'd add rhubarb to the veggies already suggested - it crops well in sun or shade
I've also got raspberries currently cropping nicely in a part of the garden that is in shade for 1/2 of the day

Good idea. Bloomin slugs destroyed my rhubarb a few years ago. Must give it another try.

This is th first year I tried growing veggies in a new raised bed...tomatoes (5 different varieties) 3 varieties of chillies and some cucumbers. Growing like triffids but not really fruiting. My basil died while I was on holiday (a dry spell) and my rocket just decided it couldn't be botherred LOL. Better luck next year I say! Would love to know how you get on.

@Loobles .. Sounds like you need a good high potash feed to get your toms to fruit .. At the moment you seem to be high in nitrogen this is giving you a lot of leafy growth ...
Spent mushroom compost is good for raised beds.. Add it at the end of the growing season to allow to cool down before planting in the spring.

It's all brand new top soil, sand and high vermiculite compost, with tomato food. i think the main problem is I underestimated how big they'd grow, so they're too close together and shading each other. Have learnt from my mistake but it's too late to do anything about it now I think. I think I'll get something off them...eventually LOL

@Loobles .. Are you training them by pinching out the side shoots ? Some growers will put tomatoes in a ring pot system or grown on straw .. This can be fun .. Your new top soil could be rich in nitrogen .. Have you done a soil test .. You could try thinning out some .. If they are that close you could end up with a fungal problem. Do you have any flowers at all ?

I have a few flowers and some definite fruits (small ones). I did consider thinning them out but wondered if it would work...will have a go at thinning them out a bit. Thanks for your help.
