Done lots of tests today to see what happens, every 1/2 hour. Both my breakfast and lunch was eaten as I had the insulin. Looking at the results how long do you think I should have my insulin before I eat? I was thinking maybe 30mins before... any advice welcome. Thanks :D

09.15 - 4.5 - Breakfast 20g CHO (1.4units)
09.45 - 9.5
10.15 - 11.5
10.45 - 10.0
11.15 - 8.2
11.45 - 8.4
12.30 - 6.4

12.30 - 6.4 - Lunch 82g CHO (5.8units)
13.00 - 6.9
13.30 - 8.2
14.00 - 11.2
14.30 - 10.8
15.00 - 8.4
15.30 - 6.7
16.00 - 6.5
16.30 - 7.9
17.00 - 5.5

Basal is currently set to 'home mode' I don't want to fiddle with them for the time being as they are usually in 'work mode'

Candi-girl,

As you are pumping insulin it's difficult to advise on the correct method of insulin delivery from someone who is on MDI, hope someone comes along soon! :)

p.s......might be a good idea to post this in the pumping section of the forum also.

The simple answer is do a basal test, and if that proves not to be correct put it right. If the basal is correct then look at your carb ratio. Also the method of delivering the bolus depending on what you are eating.
Personally if I eat non carb meals as in high protien then I need a lot more insulin than a carb meal would need.
Just looking at your results tells me though your setting are wrong.

I have tested both of my basal tests, quite recently and both held me steady. The Bolus ratio has been set the same for ages and most of the time it works.

I am going to start having a no carb breakfast.

Personally, if your basal has been tried and tested through fasting and is holding you steady don't change it!

With those results i would be ever so tempted to tweak my ratio up everyso slightly. My ratio bolus is significantly higher than yours, so a small tweak for me is probably a big one for you.

I think you have a great starting point though.

I aim to get my BG back to starting point assuming i don't need a correction at the most 3 hours later. Going by this rule on both occasions 3 hours later you are higher than you started which would indicate to me your bolus is slightly out. I'm not sure how adjusting the timing of your insulin would help, adjusting the time will only help avoid spikes or lows before spikes if eating high fat food. it still is the same amount of insulin.

Be weary of no carb breakfasts, this usually leads to people eating eggs, which are protein which your body will probably convert 60% into glucose when they are no carbs to convert. So you may still need insulin if your carb free based breakfast is egg based.

Breakfast is tricky enough for me without thinking carb-free! i bet lots of peeps here will have a good few ideas for a zero or low carb breakfast..

Happy testing, from your results i would think it'd be little tweaks here and there, good luck! :)
