Advice Please About Symptoms In Daughter

Hello. About a month ago, my daughter started showing diabetic symptoms - increased thirst (drinking 2+ litres of water a day), leaking through nappies, increased hunger (shoving food in her mouth and instantly asking for more), being moody & irritable and telling me that she is tired. Her childminder has also been concerned about her drinming etc and has said that she has started having tantrums and being very tearful which is not like her at all.

She has been to the doctors and had a urine test and a blood test. Her urine came back borderline and another sample has now been sent to the hospital however I anticipate this is borderline too as I have not yet received a call with the results (I would assume if ketones and sugar were high I would have heard by now). She had the HCA1 test done for bloods and although this was a little high, they were satisfied with the levels.

Now call it mothers intuition, but I know she's not right. I have never questioned the doctors before but I just have a bad feeling about letting it go. She isnt herself and the amount shes drinking is starting to worry me.

My question is, did anyones child have tests that were borderline or negative and it turned out to be diabetes? Also, before being diagnosed, did your children present the symptoms constantly or did they fluctuate - for example one day drinking loads then the next not so much?

I should also add - I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it - but if she has sugar or food in general she is uber high and hyper, if she's hungry she is super angry and upset.

Any advice would be so appreciated. I dont want to keep harassing her doctors if I'm being anxious for no reason. Thank you so much.

Hello and welcome to the forum @kjjones93

Mothers intuition is vital when looking after youngsters, we automatically know when things aren't right, however if you've already been to the doctors and blood tests have come back as borderline then try not too worry.

With type 1 diabetes kids can fall ill very quickly so within a couple of weeks, you need to be looking out for the following symptoms: pear breath, weight loss, extreme irritability, tiredness as well as extreme thirst and peeing, however if your child is drinking a lot then indeed then will also be peeing a lot too, kids also go through growth spurts so need to consume more food. They do get pretty hyper after eating so converting glucose to energy and same as adults will get grumpy when hungry, that's pretty typical of kids behaviour. If anything untoward had come up with the HbA1c test then you would of been contacted. Just keep an eye on them in the meantime and try not to worry, and any deterioration in their health then straight to A&E.
