Hi there,

My animas vibe has failed on me (it's a replacement one that I've had about a three weeks and it appears that the motor has gone) and I won't be getting a replacement until Monday (for added drama we go on holiday this evening!). I've taken my emergency stash of NovoRapid and Levemir out of the fridge but after 2.5 years on a pump find myself a little nervous about starting again.

I seem to remember that I used to split the levemir does, 50/50 about 12 hours apart. I would be really grateful for any advice from current Levemir users - how does it work best? And could anyone recommend how I determine how much to take - currently my pump basal rate is 16 u a day. Shall I just aim for this, taking a quarter of the dose now and the other half of today's does this later this evening?

I feel happy enough to bolus novorapid with the same insulin: carb ratios but please advise if you think I should be a little more cautious.

Many thanks all,
Mo

if you can last until 6-7 pm it might be a bit better for managing the change to twice daily levemir injection as taking it now leaves you at middle of night for a 12 hour split.

7-8 units should see you about right.

-- i agree about being cautious -- you can afford to run slightly high until monday without any long term ill effect.

Your basal is probably lower now than when on MDI so be prepared for some high readings. You can always make adjustments to your Levemir after a few days. You might not even have to make any increases if your holiday is an active one or in a hot country.

Mo, take the battery out of the pump and rest it for a couple of hours and see if it will go again. Mine did.

Thanks for the advice all. I've decided to take a pump holiday for a few weeks until I return home and take delivery of my replacement pump, and I'm getting back into the swing of all things MDI.

I was on 17 or 18 units pumping basal when I stopped.

Am on split doses of 7 at night and about 7 in morning. Could be 6 if ultra physical during day or could be 8 if sat on bum majority of day. Have my levemir at about midnight. Have my morning dose about 8-9am. Am far from rigid on this. It doesn't really matter what time at night I have it from 9pm onward. Or I mornings either. I have to have a bolus for waking in the morning before I do anything. This is generally around 2.5 or 3 units. This just counteracts the huge phenomen I get on getting out of bed. It's not dawn phenomen. My nurse suggested 20 units in one dose.... I had totally forgotten how to MDI!! It was only members here that got me through it.
