Hi

I'm new to all this. I don;t have diabetes myelf but my 82 year old mother was diagnosed with type 2 a couple of years ago. She also has increasingly painful arthritis and carpel tunnel syndrome and finds doing anything with her hands very difficult. She insists that having diabetes prevents her from using any sort of pain relief. Surely this can't be right??????? I'd be really grateful if anyone could put me straight.

This is not true. There may be some other medical reason why she cannot take painkillers, her GP should be able to confirm or deny that. Diabetes in itself does not preclude painkillers.

I am a Diabetic. I take many different painkillers at various times and they are not contraindicated in general. There may be specific drugs which your mother cannot take, which the GP should know about.

You need to discuss this with the GP and your mother.

I thought so. Thanks. I think the trouble is that she was diagnosed in hospital and was never given any clear guidance. She sees a nurse at diabetic clinic at the doctor's who told her she can;t take any cold remedies, use plasters etc and i think she has taken this to extend to pain relief. Time to insist on an appointment with the doctor, I think........

Good idea. There are some things which a Diabetic should be careful of taking, however it isn't a blanket ban. Discuss with the GP or another good person to speak to is your regular Pharmacist. The main thing with cold remedies is the sugar content.....although some can interact with other drugs she may be taking. Go to the Pharmacist for ANY over the counter meds, they are the ones that should know best.
