Hi, I am a newbie to any posting on here. My story is looonnngg!! 25 years of chronic illness, severe insomnia and anxiety and psoriatic arthritis. Type 2 for 18 years and 10 of those on insulin. I was slim when diagnosed, nobody in my family have any of my conditions ( if we didn't look so alike I would be convinced I was switched at birth ) as I have become progressively more ill over the years and been put on meds, I have gained weight and my blood sugars are frighteningly high. Fasting bs approx 12. I am currently doing low carb and intermittent fasting, have lost 25lb. No change in my general health, actually in more pain, a lot of inflammation and yo yo sugars. High in the morning, gets higher the longer I fast. Rapid drops to hypo shortly after eating, I am a mess. So, I bet you are so glad I have decided to post .....
I have no other diabetic complications despite being t2 for so long.
My consultant says my pancreas is packing up and beta cells are knackered ( my interpretation)
If anyone is still reading any helpful advice welcome xx

Hi and welcome
Meds wise how is your doctor treating your type 2 and SA? Are steroids having an effect perhaps? (well known cause of high bgs!)
Re the knackered pancreas, has he tested ? C-peptide or a fasting insulin perhaps.
It does sound as if your beta cells are 'b****ered' but you should get tested for that. In the medium to long term your body may adjust to low carb and your beta cells could yet recover!
Fasting should allow your glucagon to trigger the release of energy (glucose) from stored fat and liver fat but insufficient insulin would mean that your cells could not use the energy properly.
Lastly is it possible you've got some delayed gastric emptying wherein you go low then high after meals. This is a complication of diabetes due to nerve damage btw.

i am sorry you are so inflamed etc. and having high blood sugars/hypos is exhausting so it is very important you get some answers but as you say it is complicated.

I eat in the morning to stop my BG levels continuing to rise. A meal with about 10 gm of carbs does the trick. I can then go all day without eating, and have supper in the evening. By testing at set times during the day either eating or fasting I could see that the two meal option was decidedly kinder to my body.

Hello and welcome,

You have been through a lot.

I also find that my blood sugar levels go up if I fast. I suggest maybe having something to eat in the morning and see what happens. My levels are lower than yours so sticking with the fasting- still have a lot of weight to lose.

My thought would be to try something with low carbs and test and then maybe try something slightly higher and test.

Good luck.

Wow, that sounds like a real battle on your hands.

In my limited experience, I have been low carb for three months and my BS really improved. How long have you been going low carb and I wonder if there is a period of adjustment??

I have just started fasting (16:8) and my morning BS test is much higher than it had been for a few days. Although today it has come down.

Insulin didn't work for me, except weight gain. Out of interest, one of my oral medications was changed and my BS went sky high. So it would seem that different medications do work better or worse for different people.

Final observation is that with low carb I have lost a little bit of weight, which in turn helps with the BS - you know this, right.

Final final observation, if it were easy to slim and fit there would be no plus size people on the planet. It is hard work to deal with diabetes. But keep at it, you can do it.
