Have you looked at the low carb plan? Anything high in carb will raise your A1c (bread, pasta, rice, cereal, etc). Best thing for weight loss tbh is calorie defecit. You can google how many calories you should be having for your sex, age, weight, etc and then adapt your calories accordingly.

Hi mack76

If you read about a bit on these forums you'll see that what works well for one person doesn't necessarily work well for evrybody. So in my opinion there's not a "one way" street to achieving what you wany. You'll have to find what works for you. Having said that, you can pick up ideas from people and given the range of approaches described on here, you should find one that suits you, and works for you. No point persisting with something that doesn't work.

I'd had bad diabetic symptoms for at least ten years but was always told by the medics I wasn't diabetic. Eventually at the end of 2019 I got a diagnosis with a BG of 51. My approach five years ago was to cut carbs to the absolute minimum, and I've kept that up. So I dropped completely all the high-carb items: no cereals, pasta, bread, pastry (anything flour-based), sugar, almost all fruit, potatoes and other root veg, beer, etc.

I aimed for 20g carb a day with that coming from green veg. My food was and is meat, fish, cheese and cream, green veg, mushrooms etc. I pay no attention to calories whatsoever. Calorie deficits simply don't work for me long-term. Five years of low carb and never being hungry has worked for me.

My BG was normal by April 2020. Over the years following I lost a fair bit of weight - I can't be sure exactly because I don't know how heavy I was when I started. It's at least 90lbs. I didn't do any exercise at all until the beginning of 2023, by which time I'd lost most of the 90lbs and enough weight not to injure myself. I'm playing football again three times a week and doing a pilates session as well. Exercise had exactly no impact on my weight loss but now I really enjoy it and I feel good doing it.

I'd recommend not snacking if you can. If you're hungry, eat something substantial. If you're not hungry, why eat? If you do want something, try pork scratchings, hard boiled eggs, nuts, cheese, salamis, that sort of thing. You'll find meat based stuff with next to no carbs.

I don't often eat breakfast - I usually just have a couple of coffees - but when I do it's usually eggs and bacon, omelettes, Lidl's 99% meat Polish and German sausages, that sort of thing. For main meals I will have belly pork and chicken and any other meats and fish. I just don't have the carby sides - chips, potatoes, bread, pasta.

I found the dietdoctor website very helpful - some easy to follow guides. They have a subscription thing but I've never used it - there's enough free info. I'd also recommend getting a glucose monitor and testing your blood glucose before you eat and at +2 hrs. This should show you how well your system copes with what you just ate - the high point will have happened probably around 40-45 minutes after you ate, and by two hours your system should have brought you back close to where you started. The aim is to be under 8, and within 2mmol/litre of the baseline reading. I found that keeping a record of readings alongside a diary of what I had eaten helped me see patterns and work out what I should and should not eat - eg I knowI tried a bit of quiche in March 2020 that took me from around 5ish to over 14 - nothing to to with the egg and bacon filling, but everything to do with pastry.

Best of luck. This forum is a great resource and questions are encouraged.
