Hi,I have never posted before and was diagnosed Type 2 in June of this year. I did not seem to have any symptoms other than weight loss (from 84kilos to 70kgs)) and an infection that would not clear up. A random blood sugar test by pathology showed my HbA1c as 16.6, and hence the diagnosis. My last blood test showed that it has reduced to 8.6 which my doctor is pleased with however my daily testing has only shown improvement since I started cutting down my carbs. I am currently taking 4x 500mgs metformin daily. My doctor seems to think that I may be LADA however said that while ever my reading were coming down that she did not see the point in doing further testing. My morning BGs are normally around 9 -10 and 2 hours after food anywhere from 9 to 14. I will see her again in 3 months and hopefully I will have gained a little more control by then. I don't know if I should see an endocronologist or not... my doctor is very approachable and seems confident but I just want to make sure I am on the right track. Thank you for any advice .

Hi Goanna, welcome to the forum.Your readings are quite high still but you are doing well getting them to come down.I like to try and keep daily readings down to under 7 if possible to forestall complications in the future ,hopefully.A first thing in the morning reading is usually under 7 and,if you test before and after a meal you can gauge which foods put your blood sugar up too much and adjust that food either by not eating it or cutting down the portions. In general if your 2 hour after meal BS is the same or nearly the same as your before meal reading, then you are getting it right.Have a good read round the forum and you will pick up a lot of helpful advice. Please keep asking questions though. There's always someone with the answer.

Do you have your lipid panel results? Do you have high blood pressure? These may be indicative but not diagnostic without further tests

Thankyou for your reply. i am generally happy about my readings dropping but I would like my morning readings to be lower. I have found that I react quite quiclky to potato , pasta and rice but I do not seem to have any problems with fruit. is this usual? I eat multi-grain bread sometimes with a sandwich for lunch but try to limit this. Thanks for any help.

Every one is different,Goanna ,in their reactions to different foods.Fruit puts my BS quite a lot, which is why I only eat limited amounts of it.

Agreed, I can do berries in suitably small quantities but only half an apple, and I only use citrus as lemon or lime juice in cooking. yet I know some BASTARDS who can eat banana <G>

Hi Goanna. Welcome to the forum. You do sound very similar to me at diagnosis. I had 5 years of thinking I was Type 2 but was only told I'm LADA very recently. That is purely because I insisted on seeing a diabetes specialist at the hospital and he instantly suspected I was late onset Type 1.Like you, I had a big weight loss before diagnosis, even though I was never really overweight in the first place.
I think it would be useful for you to know which TYPE you are, so just politely insist you'd like a C-Peptide test and/or GAD test done. These will help your specialist decide one way or the other which Type you are.
All the best, chocoholic.

Thank you for the words of encouragement. i find that I have no one around me that actually understands this disease and the implications that are constantly on the mind of a diabetic. There is no history of diabetes in my family and this whole diagnosis was from left field!! My doctor says that I am on the maximum dose of metformin (4 x 500) and the next step is another type of medication that could cause Hypos or hypers. I am 42 years old and was quite happy that I was losing weight although I was was never greatly overweight (I just thought that turning 40 had made my metabolism kick in to its true self!!) but the doctor also said that the new meds could make weight control a little difficult. How do you all find the weight issue? Is it any different or difficult on medications?
Thanks, Goanna
