Hi All

Have been type 2 diabetic for 14 years now, take 2 tablets metformin everyday 500mg. In order to lose some weight for the past week or so i have replaced my lunch with a large salad, on a few of these days i have noticed after 2 hours i feel very weak and then when i eat more solid food i have good energy. I have always had good control over my sugar levels and the doctors have always been pleased with my blood results but for the last couple of days i have been feeling hypo..symptoms such as tired, weak, a little light headed. When i check my blood sugar the results are normal ( between 4-7, i am UK based) but the feeling of weakness is staying with me for most of the day, i have started upping my calorie count and this has improved things for the short term but i seem to be using this energy quickly and then feel weak again. Now it just take me a few days to recover from not eating enough or is this a warning sign that something more serious is wrong?

Your thoughts would be most appreciated.

Adam

What are you eating at your other mealtimes?

A change in diet from high carb to low carb will initially make you feel tired as your body adjusts to using fats as fuel instead of carbs, but this passes after a while.

See the low carb section of the forum for more information.

breakfast is porridge every day, dinner time was Brussels sprouts, peas, mashed potato with swede (no butter) and a cheese and onion pasty.

Today is porridege for bf, lunch will be 2 slices of spelt bread with baked beans and cottage cheese.....dinner not sure as yet but not salad

how much time should i give it..a few days?

Blimey if I ate that lot I would be zonked for the rest of the day wow. And my sugars would be through the roof. Well done for managing to eat that and stay low.
It can take a few days for low carb affects to kick in. I think you need to be eating a bit more fat with your lunch, throw in a few walnuts, and an avocado.

this is the thing, feels like i need a lot of food to get through the day just to feel okay. Cant believe how badly my body reacted to having a full salad as a meal, its like i was starving myself of fats and protein.

I start the day with coffee with double cream, lunch is salad with tuna or chicken I have seeds etc. And olive oil/vinegar dressing. For tea its usually chicken with green veg and butter on that. I low carb its the only way I can manage my glucose levels. I cut out refined food like flour, pastry, pasta, rice etc. Sometimes I have bacon and eggs esp. at the weekend. Shepherds pie with mashed cauli. I also buy tortilla wraps from lowcarbmegastore.
Do you have a meter to measure your blood before and 2 hours after meals?

from what I can gather you don't cut calories, you swap carbs for fat and eat normal protein ~1g per kg of lean body mass [calculators are online]
there are a lot of carbs you could cut. I cut all grains and potato

Yes, try to reduce the carbs and go for low-GI ones where you do have them. Pastry and beans can be high in refined carbs. Protein and fat are better than carbs to maintain that full feeling and to release energy slowly thru the body
