Hi all,

Have been T1 for around four years. Never really achieved a prolonged period of great control. The last year has been by far the worst. I've had consistently high bs levels. We're not talking 10, 20, or even 30. They've been bad.

Anyhow, over the past couple of months I've kind of turned things around and my bs is usually below 10. The thing is, every day for the past two weeks I've had diarrohea. Not so bad that its just liquid pouring out, but it certainly would be classed as the above. It usually occurs an hour or so after I eat - sometimes sooner. Sometimes I find I'm going about 6-7 times a day. It often occurs in the early hours of the morning too. I have terrible stomach pain before hand. Its almost as if food is moving too fast through my system.

Aside from that, I'm in good health and engage in a good, well-balanced diet. I've been on the same fast-acting insulin since diagnosis. I haven't changed anything, other than injected sensibly when needs be..... so, why?!

Is diarrohea related to diabetes? Does anyone know or has had a similar experience?

hya ,
sorry youve got problems,
this could be caused by a number of things and u rearlly need to see youre gp asap as whatever the cause you can easily become dehydrated, plz phone your g.p and let us know how u get on :) good luck

Hi leyland.

As Totsy says, you need to see your GP and ASAP. Do not leave this for days, it is not a good situation to be in. Get an urgent appointment now.

Hi
I have been T2 for about 9 years and am pretty useless at controlling my levels. But I have also experienced the same thing on and off for about the last 4 or 5 years. Like you it seems to come on around 40 minutes after eating. I don't get stomach pain but there is a great sense of urgency (and even one very unpleasant accident whilst asleep when on holiday a year ago). I mentioned it to the DN and GP but they thought it was down to the Metformin. As I said it seems to come and go lasting for a few days then not happening for a while. I was starting to wonder if it is a result of sugar level being high after eating causing more water to be drawn into the gut?

Hi chrisL.
Welcome.

Prolonged Hyperglycemia (high Bg levels) in diabetes may result in:
Vaginal and skin infections
Slow-healing cuts and sores
Decreased vision
Nerve damage causing painful cold or insensitive feet, loss of hair on the lower extremities, and/or erectile dysfunction
Stomach and intestinal problems such as chronic constipation or diarrhea.

That's the reason why it is imperative to lower our Bg levels as much as we can.

Could also be down to Metformin but any problems with that usually pass after a few weeks. The slow/modified release version may be worth a try. Discuss it with your GP.

Hope that helps.
Ken
