Hi to all on the site,

I would be grateful for some advice please

I have in the past week had a medical due to the fact i was registering with a surgery in my new home town
All is okay,blood pressure,cholesterol,kidney/liver function,i also provided a urine sample,that was clear,
The blood sample was taken aprox 1hr 15mins after having breakfast,(cereal, plus a few biscuits, tea etc) the reading i had back was 8.1 can i assume that is okay?,i read figures on here that it should be no more than 8.5 two hours after eating,in which case it should be ok,but i would like a second opinion,
My mother has type two,but thankfully no one else in the family, my weight is 10.5 stone/5.5''height,within the correct range of the bodymass index according to the surgery,i keep myself fit by walking/cycling,and eat a resonable diet..but could be improved im sure,i love my apples, plus ceareal?,not ideal prahaps?
One last question please..i wouldnt mind purchasing a monitor for future use..say to check my levels every few months or so to be on the safe side...there are so many on the market, which is the easiest to use with the minimum of fuss (if one exists of course?)
Thanks for your help, best wishes to all

Diagnostic criteria for diabetes, as recommended by Diabetes UK (the charity, not this website): http://www.diabetes.org.uk/About_us/Our ... diabetes_/
I've no idea if those are the criteria the NHS use or not. Your doctor will know though.

I think the accuchek mutliclix lancet device (that comes with any of their meters I think) is by far the best lancet device out there, much easier and quicker than the 3 others I've tried. As for meters themselves, they are all quite similar really, just pick one you like the look of - I use the accuchek aviva nano, because of it's small size, and it looks quite nice too.
Avoid the Optimum Xceed though, I have one for ketone testing, and the strips (both the ketone and the glucose ones) are individually wrapped, it's so fiddly.

I wouldn't have thought you need to bother to test your blood sugar though, might it cause you to worry about it? Also if you are currently fit and healthy, do you really need to change your diet? Worrying about things like that too much can cause problems.

I'm a non-diabetic and I've had a reading of 8 shortly after a meal so I don't think it's too unusual. The advice is always to see your doctor if you're worried about it.

As for test meters, I'll second the Accu-Chek Nano, my daughter uses it and it works great.

I would think that your blood test counts as 'random' after such a high carb breakfast, and should be perfectly okay.

However, to put your mind at rest why not book in to the practice nurse for a fasting blood glucose test? there should be no problem having one. In my practice they recommend a 12-hour fast before the test, taking nothing but water. If you can get an appointment for 9am that only means going without food etc, and drinking only water, from 9pm the previous night, which is hardly a hardship. You can take a flask of coffee and a sandwich with you to the surgery and have them immediately afterwards!

As I say, it will put your mind at rest. But you can be sure, if there was any doubt about it your doctor or nurse would have asked for a re-test. My practice certainly would!

Sincere thanks to all of you for your kind replies, that puts my mind at rest,i feel fine, have lots of energy etc,(age 52) so should be okay, will probably get a monitor eventually just to keep an eye on things though
Best wishes to you all

One thing to bear in mind if you test yourself, is your morning readings will almost certainly be higher than evening readings. Whether diabetic or not most of us experience a think called the Dawn event where your body naturally releases glucose in the early hours of the morning and your levels go up. I can read 8 or 9 in the morning and 5-6 in the evening. Quite often I read highest if I have snacked in the evening rather than eat a proper meal. Don't over test yourself though otherwise all it does is get confusing or worrying.

I'm about the same weight and height and have decided for medical reasons that I am probably actually 2 inches taller, which seems to make my BMI fine :)

Regards
Jeremy
