Type of diabetes
Type 2
Type 2 diabetic diagnosed 38 years ago On Metformin, Gliclazide and Liraglutide.
Retired two years ago at the age of 70. Live alone. Been eating better and excercising ever since.
At Diabetic Clinic yesterday and told blood sugar level at 7.0 (as 6 months ago) and lost another
10 lbs. Told to stop taking Metformin and Liraglutide immediately and to take only one Gliclazide
each morning. Is this safe ???
I have to report back in three months time.
Over the years my control has not been the best and I did not expect to change this much at my age.

Any advice would be helpful

Thanks,

Brian

Why did they tell you that? Your first port of call

Yes, I agree with @Mike D

All you can do is contact the person that told you this and ask why. Did this person suspect you might be having episodes of low blood sugars (hypo)?

Do you test your own blood glucose? That may be your next step if you don't already do it.

Cutting out Metformin won't make a great deal of difference as it is a very mild drug that helps in some ways if you are overweight but doesn't do much to lower glucose levels.

This is how Liraglutide works

Hi. I'm surprised the Metformin was stopped as most T2s take it and so do I. It only has a small effect but does help a bit and is very safe. The Liraglutide can have side effects and worth stopping if you no longer need it. It's used when there is a lot of excess weight. I'm also a bit surprised you were kept on Gliclazide rather than Metformin. It is used where the insulin output from the pancreas is suspected of being low. Gliclazide can cause hypos if the dose is too high but as long as you avoid hypos then it's 'safe'. Your highest priority must be reducing the carbs in your meals.

Congratulations on your weight loss and blood sugar readings, it seems things are going right for you. I cannot comment on your medication since your doctor or DN is supposed to know what they are doing and would not welcome my interference. I doubt they would ask you to do anything that was not safe.
