Type 2
I have recently been diagnosed with late onset type 1 diabetes just in time for my 50th birthday, originally the doctors thought it was type 2 and treated with Metaformin and Linagliptin. Blood sugars remained between 20 and 25. I went in to see a specialist who wanted to start me on insulin. As I am a professional driver it was agreed that we would try Gliclozide 80mg twice a day alongside the other medication. This brought my blood sugars down to between 4.5 and 8.
I have found that I cannot eat rice, bread or anything else high in carbs. But sweets and cake have no affect on blood sugar levels? Any ideas?

Since the new year (after all of the rich food has stopped and healthy eating has started) my blood sugar level has gone up to around 11-13. Any ideas?

Also does anybody have any advice on the dangers of not using insulin even though blood sugar levels seem to be relatively stable at the moment, is it inevitable that at some stage in the future I will have to bite the bullet?

I understand the risk to be associated with high BG.
Chances are you are still in the honeymoon period so the Gliclozide is keeping your BG under control.
As your pancreas loses any ability to create insulin, your BG is likely to rise and you will need to inject.

I am not familiar with Gliclozide but I thought (please feel free to correct me) it lowered BG so there was a risk of hypo which means you need to tell DVLA.

I am sure there are professional drivers with diabetes ... there are professional pilots. But I think you need to keep your BG well controlled.

Have you had the level of insulin your body making itself tested?

(I see insulin provided you trained how to adjust your own dose as having no more risk then Gliclozide, maybe even lower risk.)

Hi and welcome. If your blood sugar stays high when on a reasonable dose of Gliclazide then it's time for insulin. I went onto insulin much later than I should have done. I'm afraid it's almost inevitable you will need to go onto insulin in the future. A c-peptide test will show whether your body's own insulin is low.

Did they blood test you for antibodies? That would prove for definite that it's type 1 and you will need insulin I'm afraid
