Type of diabetes
Type 1
Hello my son isn't diabetic I'm type 1,he's a little bothered about him being diabetic as he wants to join the army in 6 months he's 15.ive tested his blood with my machine and shows 5.6 is this sufficient to prove his not.thanks

Are you just concerned because of him joining up or has anything else sparked concern?

Hello Guy.

Have you or your sine looked at the Army recruitment paperwork? I doubt there would be anything detailed about health at the outset at least.

To be honest, a single blood test can't prove anything. The number you posted is right in the "Normal" range, but T1s or T2s could achieve that figure, depending on the circumstances.

If you are trying to sooth your son's concerns, then I think it worthwhile to reassure him that at his age, young people's diabetes tends to come on quickly. with them becoming quite poorly. It is certainly less likely, provided he is feeling well, has his usual levels of energy, isn't up in the night going to the loo several times a night, or eating like crazy, yet losing weight. OK, a 15 year old is quite likely to eat as if he has hollow legs, but I mean hugely increased appetite.

Just because you have T1 doesn't mean he will develop it.

I do hope your son achieves his dream. Our armed forces are very important.

Although diabetes does run in families, your son is statistically unlikely to get it. The only test that would tell him for certain is an HBa1c and I doubt his doctor would agree to test him unless he showing symptoms. so please tell him to stop worrying.
