Hi I was wondering at present I don't think I'm diabetic but I have a lot of syptoms and both parents diabetic, sister, anut and uncles! I keep getting water infections and thrush when nurse dipped my urine she said it had sugar and inflammation in. She said treat as infection so on 2 weeks antibiotics as infection can cause sugar in urine is that correct?My last hbc1 in Feb was 40. The syptoms I'm getting are hungry and shakey even after meal. Real tiredness after meal could sleep. Blurry vision and keep getting infections. I try to keep to low sugar diet as family history.
 
Hello and welcome. I would advise that you see your GP with a view to having another HbA1c. We are not doctors so cannot diagnose you here.

Tagging @daisy1 for the fab info post offered to all newcomers. In this you may find loads of hints and tips.

You need that further HbA1c, though.
 
Ive got a blood test after Easter when ive finished the antibiotics. Just wanted to know if it's correct what nurse said?

Dip sticks are just a guide. Sugar (glucose) can be seen on a dipstick and should warrant further tests.
 
Only the green area is truely non-diabetic ....when I initially found out that I was diabetic, I always needed to lay down after eating, got so tired that I had to sleep, and by the way got urine infections... I got a shock finding I had caught type 2 diabetes.... , but all infections cleared after getting numbers down to normal and the need to sleep right after a meal also disappeared
 
That is really interesting so would I be classed as prediabetes or there no such thing. The trouble is my Gp didn't treat my mum until it was to late and her pancras packed up and she collapsed went straight on insulin! My dad died terribly of diabetes both legs amputed, went blind and kidney failure. Ended in nursing home with vascular dementia so I know what this disease can do

and you are not really there yet, so don´t be scared...
but there are different opinions of when the fasting blood glucose is too high... Bernstein a famous professor in diabetes has among other said that the 4.5 morning blood glucose is maybe the truely healthy morning blood glucose.... most are higher than that level, actually also many of the strict low carb/ keto-doers in here..I seems that older people are expected/ allowed to be higher in average blood glucose level seen form a doctors view-point
 


but you could stay in this forum and learn all of how to tame the tiger... most in here have learned to control their diabetes into normal levels most of the time ... and then it is not such a fatal disease actually
 
Hi Ellen and welcome to the forum. How about getting a blood glucose meter while you’re waiting for your next blood test? It’ll give you some more info for your medical team to consider. With your family history you are certainly doing the right thing to be cautious.
 
Thanx for good advice with my poor mum she was left with high hba1c the consultant at the hospital said her and my Gp new for over a year and not treated her!With my Dad he struggled with not eating sweet stuff and diet hence contributed to what happened!
 
Hi. The advice to get a meter I makes sense. As you have a family history don't feel guilty about pushing the GP for further blood tests. The next HBa1C will help. The nurse is right to the extent that illness does increase blood sugar so you need an HBa1C done when after your illness but bear in mind that the HBa1C measures a 3 month weighted average so any illness during the last 2-3 months will affect the result.
 
O that going to be interesting as I'm on my 4th lot antibiotics this year. In Jan I had chest infection and had steriods and antibiotics. Now second lot of antibiotics for water infection!

Oh dear you have been through the mill. Steroids can raise blood sugars just on their own, without any accompanying illness, so keep on at those HCPs to check everything out properly.

Thank You is there any other tests for diabetes except hbac1. I know when I was the steriods I felt awful couldn't keep my eyes open and no energy everyone said it would do the opposite! I do have M.e as well which doesn't help so very little exercise.
 
@Ellen67 - You talk about a family with diabetes at almost every turn. Are those family member all Type 2, or are any Type 1?
 
An HbA1c is the standard test these days. Some Drs still do fasting blood sugars or glucose tolerance tests but I was diagnosed on two HbA1cs taken about 10 days apart.

When nearly all your family is diabetic I think I have need to worry. Dad t2 died of it sister t2 grandad t2 auntie t2 mum not sure t1/t2 as her pancras packed up her brother t1.
Both grandad and dad got gangrene in both feet. I think you would be worried when you start getting syptoms!
 

Ellen, please don't think I'm trivialising anything here. I'm certainly not.

The rreason I asked about diabetes types of your family members was to see if there is much auto-immune diabetes in your immediate circles. Bearing in mind your HbA1c in February was non-diabetic, then within weeks you have some definitely potential diabetes symptoms,, that's fairly quick for things to take a downtourn towards diabetes. That said, it's quite, quite possible.

All I would say is, as other suggest, trying to find out why you are having so many infections is worthwhile, and if you can access a blood glucose meter, it would be helpful to see where your finger prick tests are at the moment.

Whilst T1 is rarer than T2 in those of us who have meandered past 40, it isn't altogether unheard of. I'm just being a bit cautious for you.

Well, it can, but for sugar to be in the urine, it'll usually be really quite elevated.

I'm not saying you're T1, as I certainly can't tell or diagnose, just trying to ensure you have an open mind and are mindful that should your condition seem to escalate that you don't ignorere it, but seek advice without delay.
