apologies if this has been posted before. Abbott Diabetes healthcare are giving away free meters & I was just wondering if there's a catch to this & if anyone has received a freebie?

Free (and very low cost) meters are standard practice for most manufacturers because they know they will get their money back (and more) through sales of blood glucose testing strips. The meter is a one-time cost, whereas the testing strips are a never-ending expense.

I know a retailer that gives away printers for free because they know you have to buy ink for ever. Similar principle.

Free meters come with expensive strips. MUCH cheaper to buy a meter with cheap strips, like the SDcodefree on amazon

Thanks for replying Indy, Squire & Grazer:-) catch with everything that has free attached to it:-)

Also, if it's the meter with the bolus calculator and that was the reason you were interested in it, that function has to be 'unlocked' by your 'healthcare professional'. (Guess you have to do DAFNE or something...)

Hiya, I got the meter from abbot a couple of months ago. You have to see your DSN to activate the insin dose calculator. My DSN had no idea how to do that so I had to find the code online and unlock it myself. That aside, it's an ok meter. The display isn't great and it takes a little while to adjust the dose calculator to suit, but it has definitely helped to take out some of the guesswork :)

I have a Freestyle Lite from Abbott and buy my strips direct from them. I can heartily recommend their customer service.
