Hi All

Struggling to get my blood sugars down below 22mmol/L at the moment, and don't know what to do.

So I was diagnosed last summer and been doing well. My HbA1c levels dropped from an initial 90 down to 22 in September, then last week (3rd test) they went up to 44.

I've been feeling rough this last week, so started taking my blood sugars daily again, and have been consistently getting reading in the high twenties. So I have been ultra strict with myself this last week and started eating very healthily, zero carbs, sugars etc. Despite this, I cannot get my blood sugar levels below 22 mmol/L, and (yesterday) had a couple of readings above 33mmol/L.

Just to complicate matters I have this cyst at the moment, so have been taking lots of antibiotics (Flucloxacillin & Ciprofloxacin) - could this have an impact?

I have an appointment to see the practice nurse next week, should I just wait, or try and get to see someone sooner (my wife wants to take me to A&E...)

Many Thanks in advance
Pete

The cyst won't help your sugars but I still wouldn't expect numbers this high with a type2 on very low carb. I agree with your wife. Ketoacidosis is no joke and with those numbers it's well possible, especially if you have undiagnosed type1.
Take care and get better soon!

Hi,

Antibiotics can certainly increase blood glucose - as can infections. But I don't think any of us could venture a guess at how high your blood glucose is likely to rise because of them.

With readings of 33mmol/l I would urge you to seek medical attention immediately. Whether that is an urgent call to your surgery, or A&E or ringing 111 and following their advice is up to you - but blood glucose that high is definitely a concern and should not be left til next week.

Do you have any way to test for ketones?

Edited to add: until you get medical advice I would advise you to drink plenty of water, and avoid anything carby or sugary. So no fruit juice or drinks with sugar in.

And please let us know how you get on?

Agree, something is amiss here, I would have expected such a superb 1c result to not be seeing those results. whilst I can see circumstances this could happen they are all a bit of guess work.

Listen to your wife and go to a walk in centre or A&E today. you are not being fussy, this is your health and you are worth the effort.

let us know how you get on.

Hello @WizWas I think you need to get some support with those numbers, get yourself down to A&E and get checked out, best o be on the safe side, good luck.
