Afternoon slumps

Hi. Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing the same problems. I am on novorapid with meals and glargene at night. My problem is I run 3-4 times a week for between 30 to 50 mins (depends on time available). I'm fine in the morning as my Bloods usually go up (even if I need a corrective dose) and with no food. However during an afternoon run (about 4 hrs after insulin) I have to be higher than 16 or won't make it back, for example I was 18 at 4pm then went for 30 min run and was 3 upon return. None of my specialist team can give me an explanation and can only suggest to reduce lunchtime insulin. However if I do that I'm going to spend 4 hours at a higher than acceptable Blood sugars. If I don't run it drops between 4-5 hours after insulin but only by a few mmols. Anyone else having afternoon slumps with exercise?

A couple of things come to mind
- dawn phenomenon rise working with your drop due to exercise leaving your BG how you would like it in the morning.
- insulin on board working more effectively when you run in the afternoon and dropping your BG during afternoon runs. NovoRapid lasts about 4 hours in your body so you may have some left when you run.

Rather than taking less insulin with lunch you could take a very diluted fruit cordial instead of water on your run in the afternoon.

I personally find my bolus from
Novorapid lasts up to 6 hours.

If you are going up to 18 then you do really need to sort these highs first... before runs to be honest...

You need to be basal testing to get levels under 8.0 pre running and then to sort foods and bolus out pre running.
