So my wonderful 10 year old daughter was diagnosed Diabetes in October. Massive shock all round. General bewilderment from me. Aisha brilliant. Me less so. I am what can only described as a hippy type. I read eveything and tried to get my head around it. I am single parent, with dual parenting of my daughters with my ex partner. So Aisha has taken on a lot of the responsibility and I have pushed my head deep into the sand. Until last night when my girlfriend noticed Aisha had been going to the toilet for drinks all day. The familiar mug in the sink of the bathroom had reappeared, it had not been there since pre diagnosis times. So in the middle of the night key tone test, fine, blood measure very high off to hospital again. Got back home after an hours sleep and thought it was about time I stepped up to the mark. I am reading and absorbing, trying to reach out for advice and support. Hello I am Stuart.

Hi Stuart

Welcome to the forum.

It's a fantastic source of info. You daughter sounds like a star, and you are right to step up and help her. Its a daunting disease to everyone so don't be too hard on yourself.

You will find SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much help on here. Get to reading and asking questions. Someone will know the answer. I'd say be careful not to take over where Aisha's been doing so well, include her and see what are her questions.

Hi Stuart, wow, she's someone to be proud of! And that applies to you too! Through going into a diabetic coma last August, I am now type 1 and have struggled to take everything on board. I can't imagine what you all must be going through but I'm SURE you'll make it together. I think the Paula Carr trust at our hosp provides a good book for newly diagnosed youngsters, perhaps yours does also? Good luck to you both xx

All I can say is a very big THANK-YOU.Your words brought a tear to my eye.People think diabetes is not a serious condition, but as we know it can be very, very serious. I spend a great deal of my time worrying about her. Also it his her first birthday on Friday since diagnosis any good birthday cake recipes?

hi Stuart

Have a look at the low carb reciepes section. Whitbyjet has done some superb low carb cake reciepes, tried and tested by many on here.

Hi Stuart and welcome to the forum. I'm sorry to hear about your lovely daughter and I understand how you must be feeling right now.

Education is the key and if you have not done so all ready, then ask your diabetic care team about a DAFNE course. This will teach you how to match insulin to carbohydrate in the food your daughter eats, thereby keeping her blood more stable and avoiding the swings between high and low.

I would also recommend the following book Type 1 Diabetes in Children Adolescents [Paperback]
Ragnar Hanas (Author) . It has lots of useful information and although it does go quite in depth it does cover everything in a clear and concise manner.

At the moment, it must seem like you have a mountain to climb, but things do get easier overtime. I'm not saying it eventually will be all plain sailing, but things will get back to normal and managing your daughters diabetes will become a way of life.

This site has lots of other parents who are always on hand to answer questions, offer support and even a offer a shoulder to cry on. I came here when my kids were diagnosed 3 years ago and have found the help and support invaluable and I hope that it can help you as much as it has me.
