Alcohol and Metformin Slow Release

Does anyone ever have an alcoholic drink when they are taking Metformin SR? I have read its really risky but if I am to be on these for the rest of my life, I wanted to make if its safe?
 
@jal16 when I was taking Metformin I did not alter my alcohol consumption, which is higher than the recommendations, and I noticed no adverse effects.

I never took the SR version, as I also suffered no other side effects from the basic version.
