hey

i have always liked a drink here and there, but ever since i’ve taken my sugars and diabetes in general very seriously i have stopped drinking. i have a few events coming up that i would love to be able to get a little tipsy at if i’m honest and let my hair down a bit. vodka i have heard drops your sugar levels and wine rises them. to be honest i couldn’t have a good time drinking either because i’ll be constantly scared of being dangerously high or dangerously low. does any other type 1 diabetics have a good method they use when drinking alcohol? maybe a way to drink and keep them a bit high but not dangerously high?

Hi @emily deacon - I wouldn't go with what you hear. You'll have to try it and see really. But for me, neither vodka nor wine (red or dry white - e.g. Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc) have any effect on my glucose levels whilst I am drinking, nor noticeably overnight afterwards. I do find that the following day I tend to be more sensitive to insulin though.

Beer on the other hand spikes me then drops me.

Didn’t drink for five months after diagnosis. Tend to drink red wine and have no problems. Beer is more of a problem, as we drink higher alcohol level beers, so always bolus for them, and they are more of a treat. I would say go for it. Start out gently and monitor carefully.
