Alcohol, metformin and insulin

Hi, I've not long been on medication trying to control my type 2 diabetes but ive been avoiding alcohol so far.

As it is my birthday this weekend and i am going out for a few drinks and a meal, i was wondering whether you had any experience on whether this is going to have any ill effects (other than a hangover).

Is it safe to drink on metformin? (the leaflet says not too), do i even still take my full dose (2000mg split over twice a day), and do i still inject my insulin at bedtime as usual?

I dont want my BG to drop low while I'm out and make myself ill, I dont know whats for the best?

My fasting BG is around 6, and my bedtime one is usually 5.6 - 6.6. If that makes any difference?

Any advice gratefully received, thanks.

I'm on same meds as you and enjoy a beer or 3. I asked a dietician last week and stock reply "everything in moderation" etc. However, she did say that initially alcohol with raise your sugar levels but after a few hours ( during night or early morning ) it causes the opposite effect and can make you go low so she said that if you do have a night out, have a snack before you go to bed and test first thing. Enjoy your birthday, don't let diabetes ruin all your fun. An occasional night out is fine !
