sorry for posting a question so close to my last question, however, I haven't been drinking for months as I cut it all out so I could tighten my blood glucose levels more, i have been told the best thing to drink is Vodka and a Diet Mixer as there are no carbs? is this true? I have a party tonight and plan to have a few drinks but would rather drink something with little sugar or carbs if possible, what do you guys drink on special occasions? and what is safe for diabetics to drink? Thank you in advance !! :)

Before I was 'labelled' I had a long standing marriage to Stella (probably part of the reason it bit me!). I too went into quite a period of 'celebacy' aftterwards. However, I've now divorced Stella and have quite a cordial relationship with Gordon and his good friend Hendrick!.... though I don't think I could handle all the Beefeaters!

G&T is now my tipple, although I always go for diet or low calorie tonic.... this seems to have little effect on me - either way! I sooooo enjoy a nice G&T now where I didn't before!

I do still have the VERY occasional tryst with Stella once in a while ..... just to remember the good old days!

As I understand it Hypoglcemia isn't a problem I have to contend with (so far), but is something you may want to wary of as alcohol can cause a drop in BS levels. I have a friend who is T1, who still enjoys 'a night out with the lads' once in a while, but mitigates it with what he needs to and carbs before sleep.

Enjoy your night out' and remember after a period of abstinence it won't take much .... you'll definitely be a cheap date!

Best wishes

Wine or spirits don't usually need a bolus - in fact, they usually need a few extra carbs.

There are a number of threads in Type 1 with alcohol suggestiins and experiences :) The important thing to remember is that alcohol can cause hypos - sometimes hours later - so be cautious and test lots.

Would you like me to move this to Type 1 for you?

sorry for posting a question so close to my last question,

Nope! That's what the forum is for, and there's no time-limit on how many questions you ask and how often you ask them.

I'm with @Heretic1 - gin (you can get some lovely, super-fancy ones - I'm currently enjoying my time with "Greenall's Wild Berry Gin") with low-cal tonic is just the best. If I'm feeling extra-fancy, I'll even freeze some raspberries in ice cubes, tear up some fresh basil leaves and shove... delicately drop them in, too.

Though I don't know the ins and outs of the differences, I do know that T2s and T1s will process booze somewhat differently, so do take @azure 's sage advice and have a look at experiences of some of the other T1's.

Hey, just to say, I think you're doing brilliantly. You've really taken your diabetes by the horns and you should congratulate yourself - personal reform is never easy, and, from reading your posts, you've accomplished a lot in a very short time. Good for you - and good for your health.

I hope your evening out is a fab one!

If you want to drink beer then Marstons Low C or Holsten Pils are carbohydrate free. Most spirits with a diet mixer have few or zero carbs. Do some extra blood tests and keep hydrated as alcohol will dehydrate you and this burns glucose like crazy. Also if you are a little bit merry and have a hypo take care that people don't think that you are drunk and ignore you.

PS have a great party and enjoy yourself :wacky:

I recall my first 'night out' post labelling.

It was a really good friends stag weekend. I wasn't particularly looking forward to it as I felt unable to relax and 'join in' as I would have done.

I took it steady and alternated drinks ... I did still have a few beers! Towards the end of the evening I began to worry and panic that I'd overdone it. I didn't test so not sure where I was, however I found an ambulance team that were set up in the town centre as a sort of first aid post to deal with drunks etc. I explained my recent labelling and the fact I felt worried. They were brilliant and did a finger prick test .... I was 7.2 .... so it really helped me relax. I then really enjoyed the rest of the evening!

It isn't however how I now routinely lead my life, but realise I can take my 'pedal off the metal' once in a while ..... just as we all should!
