Hi, I was told that alcohol can lower blood sugar levels. Hence the reason to have a little food if you are going to have a drink. Is this really true? I know this is probably a stupid question to ask, but I have to ask as I want to understand the effects of alcohol on diabetes. If it lowers the blood sugar levels then surely if you suffer from high sugar levels which i do, then having a glass of wine or a small bottle of lager should help lower them. I do not drink very much if at all, and have kept away from it mostly because i thought it was full of sugar, but after having read that it can lower sugar levels i am very confused. Can anyone enlighten me please.

I was told by doctor that when drinking alcohol, you will initially get a rise in BS, which after a while leads to a drop. I guess depending how high or low depends on type of alcohol. Lot more carbs in beer compared to a vodka and slimline tonic. It's also a good idea to have a snack before bed to counteract the possible effect of reduced blood sugar during the night. However, if you only occasionally enjoy a glass of wine, I'm sure this wouldn't cause you any problems.
