Would it make sense to set up a new topic header named “Contentious issues”
Anyone wishing to post but knowing that the view , question etc may be a little controversial
can ensure that forum users who wish to stick to standard topics are not offended/upset
new users would also see that opinions within this section may be outside of the norm.

It seems somewhat against the concept of freedom of speech that posts made that may upset some
people lead to users being denied access.
Surely minority views should be allowed to be voiced but within a relevant section of the forum.

Thanks
Matt

Matt,

I can't see the relevance of this. People post things which can be contentious, but it is up to the individual who is reading to either respond, or choose to ignore it completely.

Where do you draw the line in having different topic names?

Nigel

Anything that is posted can be contentious. However this Forum has a policy of not allowing that which is deliberately contentious, i.e. to inflame a situation or to start an argument.

That is the beauty of this Forum, we air things here, we debate, we discuss. We do not discuss illegal substances or illegal websites. That is this sites policy which every Member signs up to. We allow most things to go providing that it is conducted in a civilised manner.

Once someone oversteps the boundaries, breaks the site rules then Mods may step in to cool things down. If someone is flaming another member or is abusive that will be stopped in it's tracks. Everybody has the right to be treated with respect.

If anyone is offended by a post they are at liberty to ignore it and move on or report it where it will be dealt with properly. Freedom of speech comes with a responsibility not to confuse that Freedom of Speech with abuse, rudeness or incitement. This Forum deals with those matters well.

So if all views are welcome why do individuals get removed from posting onto the site ?

Matt,

That's not for me to answer, but there is a fine line between being contentious and over-stepping the mark. Should someone come on the forum to cause trouble or unrest, then yes they should be shown the door!

Nigel

I understand their needs to be some rules and control
However I am know questioning as to whether the forum is offering impartial guidance
if posts/members can be excluded simply for holding a view that may been seen
by some as inflammatory or argumentative.

As you state the beauty of the forum is that advice/experiences/view can be debated.
If that debate is only allowed within certain boundaries then are we not all a little poorer ?

Could it just become a mutual appreciation society ?

If you have any complaints about this Forum and it's rules then please contact the Administrator with them. As stated any member who breaks the rules is excluded if it warrants it, other sanctions are sometimes taken.

As for mutual appreciation society, I am not sure our members here would appreciate that ......unlike some other Fora on the net.

This is a family site, we have children who regularly read this board. Would you be happy having your children read, 'contentious' subjects with all the arguing etc that causes ?

This site is for ALL diabetics with many different viewpoints. It is also the biggest diabetic forum in the UK. It therefore must have a strong set of rules otherwise there would be chaos.

Mutual appreciation society ? I think you confuse us with a different site actually.

It is how someone responds on the board that causes them to be excluded etc. We welcome debate but in a proper manner, not by flaming and arrogant confrontational posting.

If you wish to ask any more questions on the rules of the forum , please
a. Read the rules in Diabetes Discussions or b. Contact the Administrator.
