Personally, I like to eat food that tastes really good.
I'm reducing my carbs (on a gradual basis) and doing my best to be a bit more active - I have lost 3KG (6.6lbs) in 4 months, and dropped to a 30inch waist (from a 33).
I feel much better for it, and the gradual process has predominantly avoided the cold-turkey reactions.
On the down side, my BG's still bounce like a hyperactive rubber ball.
