Alogliptin

Hi, my dr has started me on Alogliptin (I already take max dose of Metformin). Today was my first dose, took at 8am after a breakfast of scrambled eggs (been low carb for about 5/6 weeks). 10am I took a funny turn, felt like I was going to pass out and vision very blurry. It's now 12.20 and I'm feeling awful, shaky, like I'm on the verge of a panic attack. Sugars have been over 10 all morning, now 12.6! Are these side effects of the Alogliptin? After just 1 dose? Anyone has any advice on this medication? TIA.

Hi Emmar, I wouldn't chance it and would be straight on the phone to the Drs. It could be anything (a hypo/allergic reaction, etc) so best to contact the Doc. x

I've managed to get an appointment with doc, see what he says. There seems to be very little feedback on this medication that I can find. My reading was 12 when this happened. I've been having high readings for a while, low carb doesn't seem to be helping at all, hence the new med.

I hope you have been able to discuss with your gp? It’s not a hypo causing med, your reading of 12 is a little high but nothing too drastic. (I’ve gone up to 25) if low carb isn’t helping and numbers are high a lot I would ask gp to do fasting level and ask for cpeptide to check that. As you might not be a type 2.
I took alogliptin alone (I’d stopped metforim due to side effects) for 2 months and stopped as it didn’t bring my sugar levels down at all. Not at all, I was getting 18 most days. It tends to be the next med offered my gps after met. Might be worth discussing with gp, best of luck finding something to help bring levels down.

Hi Emmar
I have recently started on Alogliptin/ Vipedia 6.25mg , the smallest dose and so far apart from the odd nose pain ( at the start), I have had no other issues. I try and limit my carbs and have found that a high protein bread seems to be reducing the spikes . I have been on just one tablet which I take with my breakfast. I have been given a meter so check my blood glucose daily. My fasting figures are usually in the 4s and 5s and so far 2hours after food the most I’ve been getting is in the 9s. My Hba1c was last done in October before I started on these was 59. I also exercise both swimming and gym and am active.I have asked if anyone was taking the Vipedia on the forum but there seems very few?
It would be nice if we could help support each other.

Hi Kaza7 I've just seen your message, thanks for replying. I'd love to support you in this journey, could definitely do with some myself! My HbA1c was rather higher than yours at 85. My fasting levels are always my highest, usually over 10! As the day goes on I drop, my evening readings usually by best, but I've yet to see below 6. I've been low carbing (find strict keto too hard), but my bs just doesn't seem to be improving much at all. I say low carb, I've cut all sweets, biscuits etc, pasta, potatoes, rice, bread. My weight has also stayed the same . My biggest side effect of the Alogliptin is headaches and very bad dreams. But I've been put straight on the max dose of 25mg. I think exercise is what I'm missing. Look forward to hearing from you - can you direct message on this forum? I'm not sure. Thanks for getting in touch, Emma

Hi EMMA
I’m not sure exactly on this forum either! How long have you had type 2? It’s so hard with the carbs! I have found some high protein bread in Tesco and some low carb whole meal bread in Morisons , which is half the carbs of normal bread and it tastes nice! I find that exercise really helps with blood sugar and even just having a nice walk lowers my levels. It’s early days for me on this medication, but I do feel more in control! I won’t know until March( when next Hba1c) is due. Fingers crossed I can see an improvement? It does seem to affect my sinus \nose . Are you taking it on it’s own? I tend to take mine with my breakfast after eating say half.
Kindest regards
Karen
