ALOT OF EXERCISE - Diet/Menu

I am about to start a 16 week Army Style Training programme and am unsure exactly what I should eat. The programme consists of alot of running / cycling / swimming / sit ups / press ups etc etc

I want to have alot of protein obviously for muscle gain etc, I also use Creatine capsules before and after training (dont think this affects blood sugar levels)

I am a type 1 Diabetic, and have Novorapid after each meal, and a slow acting injection when I get up.

I am trying to get in shape, lose excess body fat and build muscle at the same time

Any food advise would be extremely helpful, as I am trying to make a set week long menu to repeat over the 16 weeks, including breakfast, lunch, and evening meal.

Kind Regards

Sean

I am very surprised that you found the site too technical ?

The link Dennis posted is one of the best around for all Sports and Diabetes and is explained in great detail but in a simple fashion. Did you try the tabs for Diabetes and Sport ?

There are sections listed for every type of Sport under the Sun ? Every thing is working perfectly through that link, perhaps you were having trouble with your PC if you couldn't see the information. I was just loking at aT1 who was taking up running, very informative.

ahh when I said the forums are dead, I meant there has been no replies on the sports and diabetes forum for the last 4 days, in any topics :)

Hi Ashy

I usually avoid porridge as it can spike my sugars BUT find if I have it for breakfast when I go to the gym, it stops me going hypo, and keeps me going for longer....

Worth a try to start you off.......

Hi Sean,

I'm a T1 and do quite a bit of exercise, mostly running and road cycling as it happens.

In my experience, I have a lot more stamina if I eat the minimum carbs. One big advantage is that it needs only very small doses of insulin to keep blood sugars in control, the other is that it allows your fat metabolism to work more efficiently. In this way, the body quickly learns to use fat stores for fuel which means I don't seem to run out of energy on long rides (60-70 miles) whereas my non-diabetic pals start to struggle for energy after 30-40 miles and need to get energy bars down them.

It's a very effective way of keeping the weight off too!
