I am on Janumet for last three years but with change in my insurance, it has become unaffordable.

I need some help to understand what drugs alternative are there?

Is metformin a good candidate to replace it, any downside ?

Janumet is drug with a combination of sitagliptin and metformin.
sitagliptin is the drug that increases and negates more control of the diabetes, it increases the initial insulin response to the amount of glucose derived from what you are eating.
Metformin, is to protect your organs from the diabetes because of the continuous higher than normal blood sugar levels.

if you have to pay, I would imagine that both individually would be just as expensive.

if you are not aware of how dietary management can be beneficial to diabetes.
the low carb diet forum or the website, dietdoctor.com. Is a great resource for a low carb dietary regime.

many on here have had tremendous amount of success with going low carb.
