Hi,

I'm a 30 year vegetarian who's just been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes (I'm also being tested for Type 1 as I have a lot of autoimmune diseases such as lupus, ra and sjogren's syndrome.) My challenge is trying to find enough proteins.

I have 2 conditions that make things really hard: I lost my teeth to severe sjogren's fairly recently and I'm in the process of getting my prosthetic teeth, secondly, I have a really rare condition called esophageal lichen planus where my esophagus scars closed (I've had to have my esophagus dilated/stretched back open 3 times in the last 11 months--my most recent surgery was 4 days ago (this results in choking a lot and having trouble swallowing.)

Right now I can't eat meat replacement products, any beans have to be whipped into a mousse, peanut and other nut butters are choking hazards, anything requiring chewing is out b/c I'm still waiting on my teeth and there's a good probability that I may be allergic to quinoa based on other foods in that plant's family. For now I'm focusing on really high protein Greek yogurt (in diabetes recipe smoothies), milk, cottage cheese and black bean mousse with avocados and sour cream (also, I'm really not a big fan of eggs.)

Would protein powder like you find in vitamin stores be o.k., as well? Any suggestions for proteins would be especially appreciated : )

I'm so new to this all : )

Thanks!

I've found the best place to buy protein is from 'myprotein' really good prices. Also do you have a juicer? Green juices are great using cucumber, kale, spinach, a bit of ginger and maybe an apple. Worth getting a juicer for that because you know you are getting your vitamins and nutrients. I also whizz up an avocado in a processor with the juice.

Thanks for writing, dawnmc : )

I hadn't thought about juicing, but that'd be a nice, quick option. I'd have to make mine with just the apple, avocado and cucumber, though, due to chemical sensitivities.

Thanks for the tip on where to buy the powder, too : )

You could try chia seeds, google for full nutritional value; these seeds dont need chewing, you soak them in liquid, eg water or coconut milk, they soften and swell and practically slide down your throat, add to soups, stews, smoothies or soak in almond/soymilk/coconut milk, add sweetener, few crushed berries eat warm or cold.

For the record, whey protein is NOT vegetarian since it is made from milk, and if you are concerned about allergies you should probably be careful about soy as well (being one of the most common allergens). However, there are some other sources (e.g. pea protein)

For the record, The Vegetarian Society defines a vegetarian as: "Someone who lives on a diet of grains, pulses, nuts, seeds, vegetables and fruits with, or without, the use of dairy products and eggs. A vegetarian does not eat any meat, poultry, game, fish, shellfish* or by-products of slaughter."

Perhaps you meant Vegan.
