When I was diagnosed as type 1 I was told I could eat whatever I wanted as long as I took insulin for it. Now I think I'm taking that to a whole new level. Lately I've been eating a lot of carby meals at McDonald's (I work there so we get it free at lunch) and after work as well with with a lot of sweet stuff like strawberry frozen lemonade and mcflurrys. Is this ok? As long as I'm taking insulin for all the stuff in eating. I'm not having any spikes by the way. I'm usually around 6gl/mmol. I also have from time to time an Oasis. This doesn't cause me any spikes as long as I'm having insulin and apparently that has like 20-40 carbs in?
You are fine with that, as long as your blood sugar is under control, and this is probably only a phase in your life. The most important thing is your blood sugar, and that's good. And if you put on a bit of weight, obviously that's OK for you right now.
After that, for anybody's long-term health it is necessary to think about your consumption of vitamins, mineral and trace elements. Sweet stuff typically has very little in the way of those, so you could expand your repertoire a bit! Eat more burgers - for the protein. Milkshakes also contain protein, as does ice-cream. But for vitamins and minerals and trace elements, it would be good if you could throw in a salad every day.
Also, you will put on weight if you are consuming more calories than your daily needs, but if you are not doing some STRENUOUS exercise (e.g. Lifting heavy weights), you may only put on fat. Muscle is better! Also, muscle means you can eat even more! And it reduces insulin resistance dramatically. Whereas high-fat meals raise your insulin resistance for hours, and unpredictably, making it hard to judge doses, even requiring correction doses hours after eating.
So, I say, you work there. Live with it. Just make some minor changes with benefits for you. You will feel better for it. Later, if you move on from that job, you can improve your diet even more.
