Hi , im new to the forum and have come on here to see if anyone can answer my question , ive just been watching daybreak and they had an American doctor on there saying that people with Alzheimer's have a diabetic brain , because Alzheimer's is caused by glucose not being able to get to the brain cells , I'm a type 1 diabetic on a pump and have has diabetes 32 years , does anyone know if there is evidence to support this ? This has really worried me as both my grandparents had Alzheimer's .

Hi Jen and welcome to the forum :D

Seems odd to me as diabetics by definition will have higher levels of glucose in their blood so if it is a lack of glucose in the blood getting to the brain that causes Alzheimer's I really dont understand why anyone would call it a diabetic brain. Or am I missing something?

Sounds perfectly plausible to me. If the body can build up a resistance to insulin then it follows that the brain can too.

I have absolutely NO DOUBT that Diabetes effects the brain. The first time I got my BG completely under control (by VLC'ing) it was as if somebody had (finally!) switched my brain on.
