Am I actually diabetic

That's great but if your pre meal reading was 4 then that's bad if it was 6 then that's maybe ok .. without the pre meal you can't really see.
Since coming off Glimepiride when I was going below 4 , and now on metformin I have never gone below 5.2 and never higher than 7.6 after meals.
Never had an increase of more than 1.5 usually just 1 or not at all. .
First readings of day about two hours after getting up are between 5.2 and 6.0 before meal

You definitely have diabetic tendencies, but it may be that you can tolerate more carbs now since you gave your system a break by laying off of the sugary drinks. I know for me, I used to drink 3 or 4 cokes a day, and ate very high carb. After diagnosis, I cut out the cokes and cut way back on carbs. I've been able to add back some carbs to some degree. Still staying away from the sugary cokes.

A post meal reading of 7.1 falls well within the non diabetic range in every book. No matter what your own goals are, you can't say it's a 'bad' reading. It's misleading and can lead to people thinking a 7.1 is 'bad'. It isn't.

A 3.1 mmol/l rise in BG cannot surely be seen as "good" in a T2 though?
The meal certainly would not be considered as beneficial by most T2's here I'm sure.
And you're quite right I'd be shocked were it my reading.
