Am I at risk and do i have symptoms?

I had diabeties when I was pregnant in 2007. I understand I am at higher risk because my father has type 2. However, not sure if i am getting symptoms. For the last few weeks I have noticed every time I eat I get light headed and feel my head is very fuzzy. I do occassionally feel very thirsty and need to drink quicky and then it goes away. Not so long ago my doctor thought I had a kidney infection as I kept keeping pain in that region.

I do have blood monitoring tester but not sure if a visit to the doctor is required.

Hi narinder

Gestational diabetes can often, though not always, lead to long term diabetes.
I believe there is a link between Type 2 within families but again lots of type 2's are the only people in their family to have it so again not necessarily a connection. I wouldnt like to comment on your symptoms to worry you and no one here would really be comfortable offering 'diagnosis' as such.

Have you tested with your blood monitor, to see what your figures are to give you an idea if they were similar to when you were diabetic when pregnant?

In any case, a visit to your GP is your best bet at this point. I wont tell you not to worry but you will feel better if you arrange to get checked out.
In your worse case scenario, there are lots of type 2s here who manage very well on (usually lower carb) diet and exercise, or with some medication and attention to diet so it need not mean you have to inject insulin right off.

Take care

You are at higher risk and seem to have some symptoms that may indicate diabetes. We can't give you a diagnosis here, so you really should visit your doctor and ask for a blood test. If nothing else, it will set your mind at rest.

Good luck.

Hi

Yes it was gestational diabeties and I was injecting insulin 3 times a day before meals for about 10 weeks, so I understand whats involved should i get/have diabeties. I appreciate that you can't give a diagnosis but sometimes i feel the doctors aren't that helpful.

I have got a blood monitor but when I was pregnant I was checking them 2 hours after meals. Should the same apply?

Appreciate your responses and advice.

The same applies, narinder. Test your fasting levels in the morning and then 2 hours after meals. If you get readings much above 7, then you need to take action quickly.

I'd still be inclined to consult your doctor, though, as it's quite possible that your symptoms have nothing to do with diabetes.

You could try doing this for a while

take the results with you when you see the doctor

It might be useful also to get a curve after a relatively high carb meal, say 1/2 hour, 1,2 and 3 hours after, some people (like me) get Reactive Hypoglycemia where the BG jumps up and the insulin arrives late and shoots you correspondingly low after a few hours.

This kind of pattern is often missed by a single fasting test, and by tests only at the two hour point.
