Type 2 Am I diabetic?

I had a very high hba1c in the diabetic range and was prescribed metformin. I had a test 12 weeks later and my result was in the normal range. This has continued for the last 18 months with nothing even near pre-diabetes range. Lately I have seen 2 other GPS who remarked on my normal readings and that I was probably not diabetic as a second test is required to confirm it if there are no symptoms present.

Hi and welcome to the forums @GinA21 ,

Is it just that the metformin is doing what it's supposed to do and is keeping your blood glusose levels in check?

Only your docs can really decide if you're diabetic, we cannot diagnose you.

Thanks. I understand that I guess I just wondered if anyone had been through the same thing. It was a bit of a shock to be diagnosed and then a year and a half later for Dr's (my own GP is away ) question the diagnosis. I am now off the metformin and still doing well so I will chat to my own Dr when she is back. I certainly changed my diet I don't eat processed food just home grown veg and not a lot of red meat. I don't eat potatoes rice or pasta but I do eat grainy bread. So maybe that helps too.

Yes, change of diet can do profound things....have you got a meter to see if you are a sensitive to carbs? Were you stressed out at the time of the original test? Don't get me wrong - I'm very pleased you are doing so well but treat this as a "wake-up" call...no smoke without fire & all that. If you are fortunate enough to be in a good place, then take advantage of it!

You wrote in your first post that your A1C was 'very high' - do you know what the figure was ?

Medical knowledge about diabetes is not brilliant at the GP level so don't be surprised by different opinions. Many people can manage T2 by diet alone and it may simply be that cutting down on all the carbohydrates has done the trick for you. Do the GP's that you saw later, know that you changed your diet?

The sense I get from your story is that you probably are diabetic but the diet change has improved your Hba1c. This is the circumstance that many of us are in except we bought a meter and worked at it and you just seemed to stop carbohydrates anyway. The bottom line is that if you start eating carbs again your Hba1c will rise again.

It's as my doc said to me "at this moment you are not diabetic but you are and will continue to be a Diabetic" seemed to make sense at the time.

Yes I agree with both of you. Yes I was very stressed at the time I had a lot of bullying in the workplace I had to deal with as a Manager. A test result is a test result after all. I like that I have it under control. I like that I am getting a higher level of care and free regular testing (I live in New Zealand). If you are pre-diabetic you do not get extra care or support. I will talk to my GP but I think she will already know as both Dr's I have seen (cut finger over the Christmas holidays) were planning on noting it.
