Am I ok taking this combination of tablets please?

I have been a type 1 diabetic for 40 years and I am currently taking a twice daily insulin injection as well as twice daily 2 x 500mg Metformin (4 tablets in total). Additionally I am taking daily 1 X Amlodipine 5mg, 1 X Perindrpril 8mg, 1X Simvastatin 40mg, 1 X Aspirin 75mg and 2 X Diclofenac 75mg tablets. At the weekend I had the flu/swine flu jab and since then I have felt unwell and I have a high temperature but feel cold and shaky. I spoke to a nurse at my doctors surgery who had my details up on screen and she told me to take 2 X 500 mg Pracetamol a day (max 8 tablets) and if necessary top up with Iburprofen. Does anyone know if this combination of tablets is ok please as I didn't have much confidence in the nurse? Thanks

Speak to a Pharmacist as they know what drugs can/cannot be taken together and in what doses. They'd know heaps more than a nurse.

I believe that diclofenac should not be taken together with iburprofen without instruction from your doctor. I would do as Jen has suggested and check with a pharmacist or with your doctor, better to be safe than sorry.

I will agree with the diclofenac and ibuprofen combination and also add my concern over the aspirin. Aspirin, ibuprofen and diclofenac will all come under that same heading as NSAID's and therefor stomach/digestive tract aggressive with in my opinion an accumulative effect.

If I were you I would go straight back to the prescribing doctor and ask him/her if they are absolutely 100% happy that you are taking this combination without any protective medication such as a proton pump inhibitor.

Diabolic,

Would you follow my advice if I said: 'yeah... carry on. That combination is all good'? (which I'm NOT saying).

I think you should see the doctor/pharmasist and get them to check the combination.

Sam.

Hi Diabolic-diabetic
According to the Pharmacist's Bible the BNF(British National Formulary), it is recommended that only 1 oral NSAID(non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) is taken at a time.
I have been prescribed diclofenac at times over past 10 years for a back problem. I was always told never to take aspirin or ibuprofen with it as they are also NSAIDs. Paracetomal is a different type of painkiller and I was always told that was fine to take alongside diclofenac.
You really need to check with a pharmacist or your doctor as others have said. it would be improper for anyone on the forum to say a definite yes or no to your question.
Hope you feel better soon
Jus :)
