Hi all, I'm paranoid that I may have diabetes and it's scares the **** out of me. I'm over weight but recently lost 10kg, with a continued diet or low/no carbs. Anyhow, my sugar reading goes up in the mornings... anywhere from 5.5 to 6.3. Then I eat and it goes down. I constantly test... during the day it sits are 5.5, unless I eat. The highest just after eating is around 7.5. What can I eat or do to get it back normal?

I don't think there's anything really wrong with those numbers, they actually sound pretty good - especially if you're never going above 7.5mmol/L regardless of what you've eaten.

Can I ask why you are testing, did you have trouble with BG management before?

Also, it's hard to say if you pre-diabetic without having an HbA1c test (with a result over 42mmol/L).

If the highest your hitting is 7.5Mmol aprox 2 hours after a meal? Then relax....

I think that your readings are pretty normal already. Eating low carb is a good thing for a healthy person so you should keep doing it. Stay off of sugar added drinks.

Those numbers are normal @Mootie :)

Hi @Mootie and welcome to the forum. Well done on your weight loss. The low carb diet is working for you so stick with it if you are concerned about becoming diabetic.
But as the others have said your bs figures are good and you are not diabetic.

Stay off of cheap chocolate bars, if you like chocolate go to high quality bitter one 70% or 85%
Stay off industrial made bakery products like ice creams, cakes and breadcakes, way better home made or bought in artisan bake shops or Viennoiseries.

Even for an healthy person life is too short for eating bad food.

Thank you all. My grandmother had it early in life, and lost toes in her early forties. My dad, mother and brother also have it. I guess I don't want it, and my weight is way too high... how much time does it take to to go from pre-diabetic to diabetic? I had a GTT done in Jan, and it was ok.

PS thank you for your advice,

I can understand your concern because of your family history, but at the moment everything's ok, so if I was you I'd concentrate on general health - a sensible diet and taking enough exercise. Even something like walking is good.

Do you have regular checks with your GP?

Why does t go high in the morning? I haven't eaten, and it goes up to about 6
Probably 'Dawn Phenomenon' or liver dump where your liver dumps stored glucose into your bloodstream as you wake because you don't have enough glucose in your blood to get you going for the day. It's quite normal and non-diabetics get it too. And 6 is still good, anything below 7 is good.

The only opinion I know of on that subject is that of Professor Unger who says that if you accumulate fat in your liver there is a tipping point when it all kicks off (only he used posh words). From that I deduce that it could happen quickly. Progression from then on can be quite slow and even arrested with good diet and exercise.

This is the most laid back delivery I know of and you should get an armchair ready.
