Hi I've been concerned about my 5 year old for a while he has shown many symptoms of diabetes so took him to the doctor today he had a random bm test which was 3 hours after lunch his result was 3.8 the doc said this was perfectly normal but it seems a bit low to me at the time he was complaining of being hungry with tummy pains is this normal or should I pursue this. He suffers with night sweats intense hunger and cramps in his legs and also still wets the bed. He has also just been told he needs glasses due to long sighted vision. Any advice would be appreciated xx

Hi Brummie-mummy, I am new to Diabetes so not able to give you any advice on Blood Glucose levels in children, but if it were me I would get a second opinion I would go to A&E and let them check him over.

Dr google said 3.9-7 is normal adult, I'd say you have a very healthy 5 yr old
what happens in a normal person is that when the BG gets around 3.5-4 the liver starts to dump sugar to keep a balance

Hi thank you all for the replies I understand that diabetes usually gives high blood glucose readings as the majority suggests this is normal I will just observe and see how he goes thank you for putting my mind at ease. Its just with his symptoms and seemingly having what I thought was a low reading I was just a little worried xx

My eldest lad would experience lowish bg a few hours after eating when he was a young child, on a couple of occasions when my wife walked into town with him he would go weak and would say he felt extremely hungry, his gp said there was no concern and at his age is was probably burning more calories than he consumed, she said to make sure he snacked between meals especially on days where he was particularly active, we did just that and he was fine thereafter.

As others have said, a bg of 3.8 is not something to be concerned about, however if your boy continues to feel unwell I would take him back for a second opinion on the tummy pains.

Has anyone suggested coeliac as a possible cause? My understanding is that complaining of stomach pain is a huge red flag for that in children.
