I have just had a blood test and my HbA1c has gone down from 52 to 40 since December, does that mean that I am not type 2 diabetes any longer?

Well done on the magnificent drop but I'd say unless you are at 37 or lower without medication, you are close but not quite 'in remission' and if you were to regain weight or revert to the eating patterns that got you to 52, you would become diabetic once more.

I'm afraid not - If you had Hba1c over 48 you were and are a type two diabetic the way the NHS considers things. By lowering your levels you have dropped down in to the normal range, and if you keep them down there or better then you will be reclassified as in remission after a couple of years, probably.
You might find that you can eat more carbs and not get elevated blood glucose - which is how I am now, but I am back to how I used to be, able to put on weight very easily indeed. Sigh.

I'm afraid you are still Type 2. You need a few consecutive HbA1cs in the non-diabetic range, without medication, before you can consider yourself in remission. However, even in remission you still need to watch what you eat and keep your weight off.

Well done, however. That is a good achievement.

Sadly not. The vast majority of people and medical staff would say that once diabetic always diabetic. Terms like in remission, reversed or well controlled are often used. There is no one definition sadly so it’s always a matter of debate. If you can eat however you want and take no medication and have normal bloods then maybe you could consider yourself cured but that doesn’t seem to happen. If you stop taking action (whether that be diet or medication or exercise ) it’s almost certain the levels would rise again even if it didn’t do so instantly. Whatever triggered the diabetes to start with is still there. Just under control.

A few might say if there’s no sign of it in tests or symptoms then it’s not there but as I say that’s not how most see it. (Sorry Jim)

Why 37?

“In remission” and “not diabetic” aren’t the same thing, imo

You are still a T2 diabetic, even with a reduced hba1c.

Get a consistent hba1c reading in the 30's over a period of time then you may be reclassified in remission.

In Queensland there is no in remission, I am classed as T2 - Under excellent control by both my GP and Diabetes Queensland when I enquired about this early this year.

Her's a bigger pix of the one in my sig so you can see the control I have.

Edit: Typo.

Ha! Hey it doesn’t mater to me. Personally I know that I don’t currently have diabetes and I will stay that way so long as I don’t eat bird food. Others are free to take whatever view works for them

I regard myself as having diabetes. My doctor who is a lchf friendly GP sees it that way too. The key is the dietary control as Tipetoo points out.

Some of us have to take more extreme dietary measures than others.
