What medication are you on?

I think you need to see your doctor for a chat if you dont understand what is happening

Hi. The GP needs to tell you your diagnosis. If you were or are overweight and eating a lot of carbs you are more likely to be T2. If you are only average weight and on tablets which aren't controlling your blood sugar despite having low-carbs then you are likely to be T1 (to be precise T1.5 or LADA which is T1 that comes on later in life)

If your were full on type 1 its likely you would have been hospitalized.........

SO if not, it is likely type 2, or as mentioned type 1.5, which can be mistaken for type 2......

type 1 is where your insulin producing cells are destroyed by your own immune system, this happens relatively quickly and so the resulting high blood sugar follows just as quick, hence the hospital...

type 2 is when the insulin your pancreas produces is not enough or isn't being used properly [insulin resistance], this will result in higher blood sugars also, but not all day and depends on what food you are eating.

type 1.5 is type 1 but the process of cell destruction takes place much slower, and so could be mistaken for type 2, but in fact is type 1, as the beta cells are being attacked and destroyed.

I was diagnosed as type 1 because of high blood glucose and off the scale ketones, the hospital did want to admit me but due to circumstances I was unable to stay in so I was given strict orders to see my GP in the morning who promptly phoned me at 7.45 am lol. Type 1 is an autoimmune condition where the body's immune system attacks and destroys the Beta cells within the pancreas stopping insulin production (usually as the result of a virus). as novorapidboi has said in the previous post. Type 1 causes a fast onset of symptoms from a few days to a couple of weeks (according to my specialist) and despite most people becoming very ill quite quickly I had no symptoms whatsoever if I hadn't needed out of hours treatment for something else I wouldn't have even known!

The best thing to do is to get in touch with your GP and ask what type of diabetes you have and start appropriate treatment sooner rather than later. There are tests that can be done to confirm type 1 or type 2 but unfortunately these test are expensive and often are not provided on the NHS
