Hi everyone,
Thanks for all the useful advice I have received from this site. I have been taking Metformin for Type 2 for about 5 years. although it did cause some stomach discomfort suddenly i developed severe pain and diarrhoea. This became so severe I was advised to stop taking Metformin and start something else. I was sorry because I have a weight problem and know that Metformin does not cause weight gain.
I have been given Amaryl (glimipiride) and wonder if any of you have experenced problems with this drug.? All comments and advice would be much appreciated. best wishes to you all Bonnie1

Hi. Glimipiride is a sulfonyl urea group drug similar to Gliclazide and works by stimulating the pancreas to produce more insulin. To be honest if you have excess weight I have a suspicion the drug may not help a lot but I'm not a GP or DN. Were you on Metformin SR (Slow Release) version? It sounds like after 5 years any version may have caused you problems. My advice would be to adopt the lowest carb diet you feel comfortable with together with enough proteins, fats, veg and fruit to keep you happy. Be aware that the sulfonyl ureas can cause low blood sugar if they do increase the insulin in your blood, but with excess weight there can sometimes be too much anyway and insulin resistance stops it being used. See how the weight goes with the low carb diet and discuss ongoing meds with the GP.
