AN OBITUARY PRINTED IN THE LONDON TIMES

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how hold he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:- Knowing when to come in out of the rain; why the early bird gets the worm;- Life isn't always fair, - and maybe it was my fault. Common sense lived by simple, sound financial policies ( dont spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies( adults, not children are in charge). His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well - intentional, but overbearing regulations were set in place.

Teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch, and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition. Common sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an asprin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion. Common sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses and criminals received better treatment than the victims.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burgalar could sue you for assault. Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled alittle in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust, by his wife, Discretion, by his daughter Responsibility, and by his son Reason.

He is survived by his 5 stepbrothers, :- I know my rights - I want it Now- Someone else is to Blame- I'm A Victim- Pay me for doing Nothing.

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on.

Best wishes RRB

Wow, a whole thread in which people took turns to justify their use of racist epithets (obviously not you Catherine). That makes me very sad. It's a good job that I wasn't posting here in 2009. :x

Oh I didn't know it had been posted before. I am having big problems with my c mputer this is the 3rd time I have tried to post  It all depends on how the individual reads it and it was not posted to offend or anything like that. My computer will not let me view the previous thread :( I am awaiting a new Ethernet cable  Best wishes RRB

Couldn't agree more, with a splash of homophobia thrown in for good measure, makes me sad.

I am pleased to note that people are seeing the previous thread for what it was. The sad fact is that there was no censoring or monitoring when it appeared, it was allowed to run and it was found acceptable to be racist and homophobic.

Common sense or just self preservation , this is the reply that I still have on my computer but didn't post at the time.
I taught in one of the most notorious left wing authorities at the time of the Baa baa black sheep and other similar stories such as those connected with Section 28. It was just that, a story. Common sense hadn't left the staff rooms I know of. Unfortunately these stories take on a life of their own . I'm also pretty certain that there was the odd teacher and even advisor who believed the stories they read and who, like sheep, decided to comply with what the newspaper told them the LA had decreed.

Celery.
The phrase 'common sense' often seems like a preamble to some sort of reactionary statement*; as the original thread demonstrated. It's a way of saying 'things are changing and I don't like it'. I don't believe in golden ages and days of wine and roses; I have to believe in progress because what else is there? It's sad that the concept of 'common sense' seems to have been co-opted by kind of nimbyish Daily Mail reading types.
