Hiya,
Please can someone advise me- felt really unwell Thursday and came home early from work, with tiredness, weakness and nausea and dihorria. Frday I couldn't get enough to drink had about 3litres of water and two ltr of diet soda with resulting frequnt trips to the toilet to urinate. have had really dry skin on my face for two weeks, I'm 50 and very very obese with not much excercise and noticed my night vision is getting blurred. Took the plunge and did a BG level test today on my mum inlaws machine- 16.6 mmol/l at 13:30hrs only had a bleck coffee no sugar and two small kitkats for breakfast. The reading at 18:30 lunch at 14:00hrs was 23.3mmol/l
Should I go to the quack this morning or just let the level reduce and monitor?

Thanks
Brian

Yes I agree. These readings are seriously high and should be dealt with as soon as possible.

Sounds like you could have the start of DKA. Trot along to your docs ASAP and if that's not possible check yourself into hospital. I sat around at home with DKA for 2 weeks and it God damned near killed me. Don't muck about with it!

I hope by the time I've written this that you are on your way to the doctors. Please go now! Were all rooting for you! Please let us know what happens!

Hello,
Thanks everyone for your support and advice.
Urine sample high on ketones and glucose.
Blood samples taken and sent to lab for urgent analysis of Glucose, U and E's (whatever that is) and Glucose.
GP told me to come home drink plenty and wait for her call later today and just eat normally.
She said I may have to go straight onto Insulin but will discuss with our GP specialist in Diabetes.
Said she will get me sorted before close of play today - glad the help is there when needed.
Trying to make this a positive experience - at least now I have no excuse or choice but to lose muchos weight and get off the couch and eat healthly balanced diet-just wished I hadn't kidded myself for years that i'd be OK.
Still feel a bit confused and angry with myself - what am I really facing guys - be truthful :-(

My experience was similar to yours except so bad, my GP threw me into the back of an ambulance!
I would say you probably have T1, which is autoimmune so has nothing to with your lifestyle.
I'm just about 3 months in and just getting a handle on things. Physically, I don't find it too demanding. I was quite healthy and active before diagnosis, so no major lifestyle changes. Emotionally, I am struggling with something that needs 24/7 attention, and even when I put 100% into my control, I still mess up.
Just hang on to and use any support given to you.
Glad you're getting it sorted.
Tom

Thanks Tom - autoimmune sounds about right as I also have Hypothyroidism also. My god I'm eating myself now:-) Wire my jaws up quick!
Glad your getting there.

Hi

If you can achieve a good weight loss you may be able to do without medication at all.
Don't eat and drink 'normally' as that is what got you fat. I could eat Kit Kats for breakfast too But I don't any more.

Look at the sections on low carb eating. White bread , pasta, rice, cereals, potatoes etc should be drastically cut back or eliminated. They can raise your blood sugar.
Eat vegetables, salads, eggs, cheese, yoghurt etc, etc.

Once you have made your mind up to lose weight and stick to it, everything else will fall into place afterwards. But your first priority should to to lose weight and cut back carbs. Increase exercise if you can.

Good luck
Cara

Thanks Cara,
May take me about two years to lose enough weight though my last BMI was 62 and it's increased until DKA has reduced my weight a bit in the last few days.

Lol, within about 3hrs of my first insulin infusion, I was ready to eat the whole hospital!!

So eventually got my so called urgent Glucose level from the GP after I phoned the Health Centre at 16:45 to ask what was happening - my level is 19mmol/l according to fasting blood test at 09:30 this morning.
Had porridge for breakfast and a bowl of soup and a roll for lunch, took the prescribed 5mg Glipizide at 17:30 took a BG test at 18:30 before my dinner and it was 24.7mmol/l. I've to go at 10:00hrs in the morning to see the diabetic specialist GP after I take another tablet in the morning.
I'm a bit worried it will be even higher before bed (post meal)
Am I being taken seriously or should I roll up at A@E??

I cant give medical advice obviously but I dont think A and E will do anything for you.

Please watch your diet. Porridge and the bread roll should be off the menu. Test before you eat and 2 hours later, Keep records and then you can see which foods raise your blood sugar and which you can tolerate.
Weight loss and exercise will help lower your blood sugar over all too.

Let us know how you get on tomorrow.

Cara

Can you have bacon and egg for breakfast? Or ham? Or cheese?

They are all good low carb breakfasts. And they are the sort of things you may just have lying about in the fridge. Just don't put sugar in your tea, or add in toast.

Hope it goes well.

If you think you may have DKA, (Shallow fast breathing, fruity smell on breath, vomiting, stomach cramps) Get yer **** straight to A&E. DKA can kill!

I honestly think this is type two, get to a&e and get it diagnosed.

Type 1 diagnosed 1990
HBa1c current 8.3
Pump and CGM used (animas vibe)

I have to agree about A+E, 8 years ago (at the tender age of 21) I was sent home by my then GP. I had already been diagnosed with type 2 ten years earlier. The next morning my boyfriend couldn't wake me up. I spent 2 months in a coma, a further 4 months in hospital and the best part of 2 years recovering at home. I lost the sight in one eye, most of my hearing and my kidneys are screwed. I had to learn to walk, talk etc again.

But I was lucky, I wasn't expected to ever wake up.

Morning everyone,
Hope you are all well or getting that way.
Been to the specialist diabetic GP this morning.
My pre bed level was in the 16's and was 15's when I woke up - first night in a while I didn't need to get up to the toilet.

Been given a diagnosis of type 2, my True you testing kit and prescription (now filled) for lancets and test strips and more Glipizide (which I have to increase to two (5mg each) from next week, morning and night. Got an appointment for a check next week and another for the Diabetic clinic Thursday.
Been signed off work for a fortnight till my levels are under control-I still feel rubbish and my eyesight is blurred.

I feel a bit more reassured now and have had scrambled egg for breakfast and been told to lay of the carbs and sugar or if I do have carbs go for a small portion of wholegrains.
I've to vary my BG testing to twice a day.

Have a good as possible day
Brian
