Hi, has anyone who is a Type 1 tried the Lighter Life diet ? I have just started the new 2:5 diet that you can buy from the chemist but was wondering if there was any reason why I couldn't carry on and do it for longer ? The food packs seem to be pretty much what the Lighter Life total ones are. I'm in reasonably good health diabetes wise but I know if I ask the Dr if it's OK he will say no because it is always easier for them to say no rather than risk any problems. I really do need to lose weight as since my hip replacement and bad back I have been piling on the weight and that is impacting on my sugar levels and my ability to exercise. Any experience/thoughts welcome please

Ok I think I get you. You are asking if you can do a very low carb diet, similar to Lighter Life, but cheaper and without the support and without a doctor's letter? I think Exante let you buy their stuff without a doctor's letter.

If you are actually overweight, why do you think the doctor wouldn't agree?

Well what I meant eas to actually use the Lighter life products which you can buy from Superdrug, but yes without the support. I thought the Dr might not agree because I have heard some worrying things about Lighter Life and Ketosis (not Ketoacidosis) that can cause Kidney stones and irregular heart rythms. think because it is so low in calories and burns fat quickly.

Oh I thought Lighter Life only sold the food packs direct or through their franchises to registered members. They must have changed that.

No low carb diet is going to cause kidney stones or heart problems. You should be fine asking your doctor. Lighter Life is not high protein so there is not even a theoretical fear of kidney problems as long as you drink enough (not excessively).

People that can't listen to other people's opinions.
People that can't say sorry.
My sis in law (not diabetic) went on lighter life diet... She lost a lot of weight. However, it did not actually educate her in balancing her meal intake etc for when she came off it.

3 years on she regained all the weight and more and was back in same boat as before... But worse.

I told her at the time she needed to educate herself on foods.. Less carbs..now finally she has done it. She's low carbing, portion controlling and in just under 3 months lost 2 stone.

She threw her money away on the lighter life diet...

Sorry can't help ref whether it ok for a T1, but can say that sis in law is spending less on food now and finally recognising its lifestyle choices not diet choices that is the better option on a longterm basis...

Lighter Life is expensive, no doubt. Where I think they are good is that they tackle making people take personal responsibility and overcoming psychological obstacles like denial and emotional eating. I agree they don't score well in long term food reeducation.

Sorry... That sounded very cruel....not intended. Just that my sis in law was determined that lighter life had taught her all about nutrition and how to maintain weight after... I told her less carbs n now she doing it very successfully.

Sorry for sounding cruel. If specialised diets work, great....

thanks for all the advice. I have tried their packs for a few days now to replace certain meals and then eating a healthy meal at night. What I do like about the packs is that although they are small qhantities they fill you up (I guess there is some sort of bulking agent in there) The other good thing for me is that as there is no shopping/cooking/prep of normal food. I find I can 'detatch' myself from food more. Also as they are not the tastiest morsels in the world I don't spend hours in anticipation, it's just fuel.

Talking to a friend last night and she said that she had been so worried about a friend of hers that lost so much weight on lighter life that she got totally hooked and found it extremely hard to stop the lighter life diet and return to eating a normal diet.

She did return to a normal eating diet after about 9 months and has kept her weight off (apparently very thin now) and she goes out running everyday and exercising constantly to maintain the thin body...
