Sorry about your diagnosis. It was a shock and an emotional roller coaster to all of us when first diagnosed.

It sounds to me as if you have the right attitude to get on top of things though. You are seeking to educate yourself on your disease and this will empower you to control it.

I had no warning at all just the tiredness that I brushed off thinking I was just knackered with running around after my 7month old and her being 8 weeks early just catching up on me. It just shows how easily we can ignore our body crying out. I hope everything went well for you today, I've just come back from m y appointment with more new insulin lol x

Hi and welcome, im newly diagnosed too (on Friday) and I had no idea the diagnoses was coming and to make matters worse I cant see my specialist nurse until 13th Feb so im feeling similar to you.

I'm new to this diabetes thing to, only in my case I had an op nearly 2 years ago for small bowel cancer and the surgeon decided to take my spleen and most of my pancreas out as well. No one told me there was a chance of me developing diabetes so I never gave it a thought until I went for my last check up and my BG was 12.8 the nurse never commented of the level and I was to much of a coward to ask about it so I went home and checked the internet and decided to self check my BG, so by this time it was 25.5. The wheels on the NHS are very slow but I've now been seen at the clinic and like you they don't know what type of diabetes I have yet, it's even been suggested by a doctor my pancreas could be failing. "So menu doctors and so many opinions"

I thought I was so shattered and weary with fighting off pneumonia and septis infections .
Nope - good ole Diabetes had 'got' me ...
Hadnt been diabetic pre these either .
Didnt accept nor tollerate this news well at all .

Was furious at the unfainess [as I felt it was initially] struggled for the first 6 months to accept and come to terms with this .
Have severe medical intollerances so nothing worked until we found Porcine insulin suited me best !
By this time it was 12months down the line ...

Diabetes crept up on me in 2012. Just extreme tiredness (normal for late 50s and working!) and one or two vague, non-specific symptoms that I now recognise but didn't then, despite web searches. Also weight loss, but who worries about that! Anyhow, DKA arived after a few days of general unwellness, followed by loss of appetite, peculiar breathing, vomiting and coma. Woke up in resus in the local hospital to be told I had T1 diabetes. Came out of the blue, with no family history, and, two weeks before diagnosis, I'd been on a couple of trips to London and Birmingham and basically felt fine. In summary, it took about a week for diabetes to set in. Bizarre.

I remember how I felt in the weeks after diagnosis. It wasn't easy, and for the first few months I actually felt worse than before diagnosis, but it did get better eventually. It took about six months though, as Anna 29 says, to come to terms with everything. I hated having to tell the DVLA, cancel a blood donation session (they don't take people on insulin), inform insurance companies. On the plus side, husband and work have been fantastic, and I feel fine now. I've more or less got over the 'angry' stage and accepted my lot. I was perhaps lucky that I went straight into T1 and didn't experience a misdiagnosis as T2.

Like others have said, I've found this forum invaluable for information.

She's got me in Lantus and Novorapid. Using those l've managed to get my glucose down into the single digits. Although I went 6 hours without eating a couple days ago and almost passed out! The balancing act between food and insulin is a tough one indeed.
