I had my first appointment at the diabetic clinic today and it was an eye opener as I was put onto an insulin prescription for the first time. The staff were amazing and I finally (after 5 years) met a Dietician who was fabulous and gave me loads of useful advice. I have now been prescribed Lantus once a day and I will self titrate up to the correct dosage. The Doctor was superb and was more interested in how I wanted to proceed than how she thought I should proceed. It was patient centred care at its best. It was so empowering to be encouraged to take such control over my short/long term care and to feed into it to the extent I did.

The DSN was really supportive and walked me through a basic programme of insulin management, when I need to test my blood sugars etc. I made lots of notes (thanks to the advice from the relevant topic on this forum) and she also gave me lots of literature to read as well. It was so good to finally feel that I had some proper support in place, support that i didn't always feel that I got from my GP. I came away from the hospital today and really felt that I was in good hands and that really builds my confidence in managing this condition.

Hmm I wonder if I can move to Gloucestershire.I am very happy for you Ogri, Hope all continues to go well. It is such a relief to find HCP.s in whom you can have confidence.

Thank you Unbeliever. As my post shows, it was a good experience and i wasn't expecting such a positive outcome. Thank you for your kind words and i hope all goes well for you as well.

I'm so glad it was a postive experience for you and that you have great HCP's :D I hope the insulin helps. I started insulin last week but am on a mixed insulin, it's already improved my levels :D

Hope all goes well with you Claire and I'm glad you are seeing good results in such a short space of time.

The Doctor has advised that I start on 10 units for the first two days and then increase by 2 units every three days until my morning blood glucose levels are between 4-7 mmol. She is concerned as insulin does make people put on weight and that is not what I need as I need to go the other way! Oh well, we'll see how it goes.....

It's always good to hear when people have good support in their diabetes care :)

hope all goes well.

Hi,
Am glad you had such a positive experience. We tend to forget that there are some marvellous HCP's out there.
Hope the insulin sorts your control out. In America it is quite usual to put Type2's on insulin at diagnosis as it gives the pancreas a rest.

Sounds like you are getting some excellent care Orgi, with so much negativity going around on forums about poor care from HCP it is refreshing to read about someone who has had a positive outcome...... hope all goes well for you on the insulin! :)

Nigel

Yes there is a lot of negativity about HCP's but when you find somewhere good it is nice to write about to try and balance things up. Unfortunately my GP support was quite awful but the less said about that the better.....
