Edema is caused by many different conditions many of which have been mentioned already. By itself you cannot diagnose anything as it is so vague a symptom. It's like telling the doctor you feel tired all the time. Everything makes you tired, so nothing can be diagnosed. I find older people who stand alot get it, it is often worse in summer, not sure of the reason, but it is. If you push on the Edema near the ankle and hold it there for a minute, them take your fonger away; is there a dent in your leg? This is pitting Edema and a GP should be consulted. If it goes down with your feet up I wouldn't worry to much unless it persists for more than a few months. Try taking magnesium and potassium supplements, magnesium is vital for healthy arteries, pottasium for electrolyte balance. Doing more exercise can also help.
