Annual diabetic check worry

Self absorbed and rude people! Motorists who are oblivious to the rest of the world, and really don't give a ****!
I am due for my annual diabetic check, with full blood works including fasting test and really not looking forward to it, as I am sure my blood sugars all over the place, due to having been on holiday in Canada with family - and trying to be good, but not always managing it! Then I have come back to a full blown and really nasty cold virus, now two weeks and still have the last remnants of the beast. I have felt so unwell and I feel certain that the illness has raised my blood sugars considerably. Just wondering how others cope in similar situations. :?:
 
If you're still a bit unwell, couldn't you postpone the tests for a couple of weeks? A few eeks isn't life or death, and might let your sugar levels settle a little?
 
As Malc said, postpone it for a little if you can.

If you can't, then just accept that life sometimes gets in the way of perfect diabetic control. I doubt very much that anyone is judging you, other than yourself.

If your results are worse than expected then use them to galvanise your resolve to do a little better next time (hopefully without the distraction of holiday or sickness). If they are better than expected (which I bet they will be), then you can be doubly proud of yourself for managing good numbers in spite of holidays and sickness.

Either way, there is no point in getting stressed about it...
 
Surely if the figures were bad a decent doctor would book another appointment to keep an eye on you, by which time you can impress by the "improvement" made simply by not being ill!
 
Yes, I suppose I could postpone for another couple of weeks - not due to get check until end of week, but guessing another week or two might be more useful to gain better control of my sugars. Also, as borofergie said 'no one judging me except myself, that is exactly right - I am judging myself - if I eat anything a little out of order I beat myself up over it . Finally, Gappy - you made a very good comment re: good GP making another appointment - so taking all of this into account I think I will postpone appointment by a couple of weeks - during which time I will do my best to be a 'good diabetic', if my figures are still bad (bearing in mind it takes several months of control to make a real difference), then I will ensure that I have another appointment during which time I am able to impress the improvement by not being ill. Thanks all, knew you would help
 
I wouldn't worry too much - I presume you are concerned about your hba1c results!
This test looks at the glucose bound to your haemoglobin and is fixed at the time each blood cell is created in the body. Since a blood cell has a life of around 90 days the hba1c is a reflection of your average sugar levels over the last 90 days so even a 14 day bad period wont be too catastrophic.

In any case - even if the results aren't good you shouldn't avoid the test. Your GP needs as much information (good or bad) to help you to achieve control of your diabetes !

Although that's true, the last four weeks of BG has more influence on HbA1c than the previous 4 weeks, and those in turn more than the first 4 weeks, so a very poor last 2 weeks would have an impact, even if not great.
 
Grazer - that is interesting, because like Roman I thought it was the last 90 days, which all in all have not been that great - taking into account holiday and illness!

I am getting my check next week, naturally I want to see the results so that I know what I am dealing with. Thanks for all your support . I will come back with results in a couple of weeks.
 
I have a check up twice a year at hospital and can't stand it. The layout of the room is horrible and it takes ages so i'm there at least 90 minutes.
Last time I struggled to give a urine sample so had to drink water and wait. It would be nice if the results were sent to you a week later

Couldn't you take a sample with you? I always take one in a small screw top orange juice bottle or similar.Last time I'd run out of bottles, and took it in a pickled cockles jar (suitably washed out of course!)
 
One of the best benefits of drinking Benecol every morning ( as advised to help with cholesterol, but that's a different story) is a regular supply of almost-perfect urine sample bottles (the used cotainers). ;-)

Just wish they were not so expensive
 
As some of the others said, dont worry about it too much. put it off until you are feeling better. my checks are never regular although they should be due to catching everything that goes around, i'm always cancelling appointments as i've got the flu or a cold or an upset stomach, usually caused by the metformin.

i recently had two lots of injections in my shoulder for tendinitis and that sent my glucose levels mental, 10.2 average on my recent tests but previous was 7-8, we are still working on my insulin mixture to get it down and this was a bit of a set back. my doctor has given me another review in 3 months to keep an eye on it. i would say having a full review only once a year is not enough if you struggle to maintain your levels yourself without guidance or a sharp pointy stick prodding you

Thanks for all the well wishers, I have seen my diabetic nurse and had a thorough check up, feet fine, bp fine, and has now ordered up a full works blood test for glucose, also for thyroid (as it is in the family and I have been feeling so tired since being ill), also water for ketones, however, I was planning to get this tomorrow but had my flu jab yesterday and I am wondering if this would make any difference to my glucose levels, does anyone have any experience or knowledge in this field?
 
Well I had the test and it came back in the new figures as 54 - as I understand it around 6.7, a little high although my GP told me not to stress over it, however, she wants my kidney test retaken in a couple of weeks, also told me not to worry about that, but, of course I am. Just hoping it will be a better reading next time.
